| Yes, I was a fan in 91 and bought Loveless at the time of release and yes, I think m b v is excellent. It's not as good as it's predecessor but it's not far behind. Expecting My Bloody Valentine to re-create the ecstatic sound of Loveless is both regressive and unrealistic, especially as Loveless was very much of it's time when rave culture was hitting it's stride. Like their peers i.e. Primal Scream, The Stone Roses, etc etc, My Bloody Valentine had the comedown of the late 90s after the 'high' of the early 90s and whilst m b v is no disappointment, it's muted ambience is reflective of that mood. Although mellowed-out, it still manages to be celestial, ecstatic, other-worldly, and very disorientating. Best tracks include: She Found Now, If I Am, In Another Way, and Wonder 2. | |||||||||||||||||||||

2. (=) | Queen Of Denmark | John Grant | |||||||||||||||||||
| 1976 and heartbroken. Classic songwriting of the sort not seen since Rufus Wainwright's 'Want', the quality here is so good that John Grant's debut would be critically acclaimed in any decade since the 1960s. Love is hell, other people are hell, and over and over again. Massaging a bruise until it is a rhapsody in purple, red, and blue. Is this album excellent? Yes. | |||||||||||||||||||||

3. (=) | Interpol | Interpol | |||||||||||||||||||
| Rather than being one more shot for glory "Interpol" is a more subtle, sombre affair signalling Carlos' exit from the band. By no means easy listening, it is very much their 'difficult' album with the band often sounding like they're playing with one hand behind their back, it is nonetheless a triumph. | |||||||||||||||||||||

4. (=) | Fading Parade | Papercuts | |||||||||||||||||||
| Albums this special only come along once in a while, how it's managed to remain relatively ignored since it's release is criminal. Being Papercut's first for Sub Pop, Fading Parade's seamless dream-pop updates classic West Coast psychedelia for the 2010's. What does it sound like? Imagine the Mama's & the Papa's or the Loving Spoonfull jamming with Slowdive and your nearly there, and yes it does sound better than that. | |||||||||||||||||||||

5. (7) 2 | Put Your Back N 2 It | Perfume Genius | |||||||||||||||||||
| Excellent 2nd album that rewards with repeated listens. Perfume Genius' delicately poised reflections are the perfect balm to the clamour of the outside world. Beautiful. | |||||||||||||||||||||

| A hazy, dazed atmosphere permeates this album coating every lovelorn sigh with a golden-sun drenched hue. Do I like it? Umm, yeah. | |||||||||||||||||||||

7. (6) 1 | Happiness | Hurts | |||||||||||||||||||
| Hurts are everything that every great pop band has been or ever will be i.e. great songs, killer looks, and the wherewithal to acknowledge that you don't have to be Throbbing Gristle in order to be innovative. Thankfully, Happiness has this in spades with some of the best singles of the decade so far. | |||||||||||||||||||||

8. (11) 3 | Realism | The Magnetic Fields | |||||||||||||||||||
| Influenced by Judy Collins folk albums of the 60s Realism is deceptively synthetic in it's response to 2008's Distortion. Moreover, You Must Be Out Of Your Mind, Interlude, Painted Flower, I Don't Know What to Say, and From a Sinking Boat all display a significant depth and elegance to Merritt's songcraft who seems to get better and better with time. | |||||||||||||||||||||

9. (=) | Pale Green Ghosts | John Grant | |||||||||||||||||||
| Plaintive synthpop and classic 70s rock are an unlikely pairing but John Grant manages to merge them brilliantly. Barbed, often funny, but usually very sad lyrics detail the protaganist's self-destructive but addictive obsession with a former lover, making for absorbing if at times uncomfortable listening. | |||||||||||||||||||||

| Very much the night to Teen Dream's day, in that it is more darker, more foreboding, more mysterious, and more melancholy. Best tracks include Myth, The Hours, Irene, and On The Sea. | |||||||||||||||||||||
