Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some tracks can have several thousand ratings)

This track is rated in the top 5% of all tracks on BestEverAlbums.com. This track has a Bayesian average rating of 81.2/100, a mean average of 81.6/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 81.6/100. The standard deviation for this track is 11.3.

How to describe the contrast between the sweetness of the melody and the discordant instrumental arrangements which work to create a song which, whilst clearly a Blur tune, is unlike any other song I can think of by anyone?

I’ll give it a go. You know how Jimmy Jazz by the Clash defies any real categorisation because it’s unlike anything else you’ve heard in this whole world where most stuff sounds like something else.

I’m gonna stop there for a second to say I’m not trying to be critical of similarity here. I love both Start and Taxman, David Gray and Van Morrison. I love playing musical join the dots...

But the gold standard is surely the song that sounds unlike anything you’ve ever heard. Like a virgin. Fresh. Exciting. The colour of spring.
