Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some tracks can have several thousand ratings)
This track is rated in the top 1% of all tracks on BestEverAlbums.com. This track has a Bayesian average rating of 88.7/100, a mean average of 87.9/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 89.2/100. The standard deviation for this track is 13.6.

Intricate and well crafted. The lyrics drag you in.
Every little bit of this song is so excellently crafted. The slow, creeping intro as Rael begins to realize his predicament, the wild charge of the keyboard riff and Gabriel's jagged shouts as Rael begs for escape, Banks' synth solos before and after the bridge that personify the internal madness that Rael is feeling, and so on. Even the slight shift to a major key in the post-verses correlate with Rael's hopeful thoughts about how to escape. It's all so well-constructed. I do think this one definitely takes multiple listens to fully appreciate, but when you get it, you get it. It's one of the finest moments on this album and one of Genesis' finest moments in general.
I am not a big fan of the Banks Minimoog solo. The solo undoes the threatening and carefully constructed atmosphere of the first part of the song. The lyrics here are important to try to understand the whole story. There are a lot of clues.
Epic
Epic track, better with each listen.
"i've got sunshine in my stomach like i just rocked my baby to sleep". Beautiful introduction to horrific tale of chaos & claustrophobia. Great song for quoting lyrics, as is half the album. The opening verse builds musically as it builds lyrically this way: "rockface moves to press my skin / white liquid turns sour within / turn fast - turn sour / turn sweat - turn sour / must tell myself that i'm not here, / i'm drowning in a liquid fear. / bottled in a strong compression, / my distortion shows obsession / in the cave". i love tony banks's synth playing at the bridge, possibly his fastest, most intricate passage at first, yielding to a more pastoral calm before high-pitching to the song's climax. "helpless in my violet rage", rael's friend (mirror image perhaps) leaves him in his man-made urban cage: "pressures building / can't take more / headaches charge / earaches roar". i love the spiraling out-of-control ending per-denouement.
