Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 3% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 77.8/100, a mean average of 77.3/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 78.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.7.

Van never misses it, fine music and a solid album as a whole.

The first half of this album is just incredible and is probably the greatest side of music ever from VM. The rich instrumentation through the whole album is amazing and it creates a dense soundscape with so much to explore and come back too. Instrumentally, it is extremely diverse with some outstanding performances on the trumpet, piano, violin and saxophone, This makes the music so grand and then to add on top the brilliant vocal performance makes for a fantastic listen. It feels so clean and natural to listen too as well and sounds so highbrow and intellectual in terms of its composition. There are one or two tracks closer to filler and it can feel slow at times but these are my only real criticisms of the album. Overall, this album is so under rated on this site and if this is his 4th best album then I am very excited to go back and listen to his other releases.

A later highlight. I discovered this after the others from the early 70s.

Vastly underrated. Multiple masterpieces on this one. Side two is the most consistently solid music run of his career.

This is probably the fourth best VM album, meaning that it is merely beautiful with nary a bad track in sight. I love Bright Side, Full Force Gale and Rolling Hills but the clincher here is the gorgeous meditation The Healing Has Begun.

By almost any other artist standard this would be among their very best. This is van in the middle.
