Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 1% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 85.4/100, a mean average of 84.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 85.4/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.5.

Absolutely essential. No one bore their soul more than Marvin Gaye.

One of the greatest voices of all times singing truly powerful songs. What else could anyone want?

A solid release from one of the greatest vocalists of all time. Marvin Gaye's voice is simply sensational and he utilises it brilliantly on this album. It is best showcased on the best songs on this record which are What's Going On, Mercy Mercy Me and Inner City Blues. The instrumentation on these tracks back up the quality in Gaye's voice by creating a smooth and rich soundscape that is so enjoyable to listen to. The album also sends a strong message as well that is still relevant to this day making his lyrics well worth exploring. Despite this, I do find the record to be quite repetitive in style and I do think the record lacks consistency. There are several songs which feel insignificant and skippable such as Right On and Save The Children amongst a few others. This is worrying for an album as short as this one as it should really keep the listener captivated for the full run time but I always find that I can never truly get sucked in. Overall, this has some outstanding moments that are some of the greatest in the genre but the filler on here makes it difficult to truly get into the flow of the record.

So far ahead of its time its almost nuts. You don't even need to be interested in music to clearly see how influential this album was.

The guy has a beautiful voice, which makes it even more perplexing that he managed to write such a boring album. Only two songs are memorable (Mercy Mercy Me and Inner City Blues). The rest is so unremarkable. The last track really is a saviour to this album, which is pretty much just the same boring song 9 times. I guess I just don't like this genre of music...

One of the greatest albums ever made, it's a timeless record with superb vocals, fantastic musicianship and great lyrics that are still relevant over 50 years later. I also really like the way the tracks flow into each other which helps make it so cohesive too (thus making the album feel like an experience that needs to be listened to from start to finish)

Crazy how some of the songs are more actual in 2022 than in 1971. He has amazing voice and production is great.
