Let’s get this out from the beginning - ‘Hollywood Park’ is one of the best albums to be released in 2020
This album is actually the soundtrack to the autobiographical memoir of T.A.T.E lead man and founder Mikel Jollett that was 5 years in the making. Having read all 610 pages cover to cover at the heart of Mikel’s life story is one of relationships. The relationship of a father and son, a son and his biological mother, a step mother a brother a step dad, the relationship with substances with abandonment with music.
Naturally the 12 tracks here all contain elements of events within the book. Mostly the references are obvious such as “All The Children “ dealing with his childhood in a C-U-L-T and lack of F-A-M-I-L-Y ( read the book & you’ll understand the odd spelling) whilst others are more obscure
Even without the book this album stands tall but as a package it’s an intoxicating mix of a life ripped apart and laid bare and bravely shared with the world
