Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album is rated in the top 6% of all albums on BestEverAlbums.com. This album has a Bayesian average rating of 75.8/100, a mean average of 75.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 76.0/100. The standard deviation for this album is 14.0.

Radiant synthpop with surprisingly realist lyrics instead of the typical carefree "partying on the dancefloor" rhymes. Not that there's anything wrong with the latter, but it's precisely the juxtaposition between the airy, danceable production and the gritty, desperate words that makes the Pet Shop Boys' debut record one that'll stick in your mind.

Debut album from The Pet shop boys and still one of their best. West end girls, is the obvious high point but, Opportunities, and, Suburbia, are other standouts. Strong debut.

I bought the first three or four PSB albums and this is the one I listened to longest. First heard Opportunities (I think it was released as their 1st single) before anything else and loved it. It was only when I subsequently heard West End Girls, and then Opportunities was re-released that I made the connection, and bought the album. I'm not keen on the first track (not the most musical of tracks), but the rest of side one is good. Side two is not quite so good. I soon grew bored of PSB, and when I visited later LP's they didn't hold the same affection as this one does....the best of their's that I've heard.

I always found this to be a fun sound, until I was old enough to appreciate the melancholic mood underneath. More layers than most 80s pop music.

Below puts it about right. The arrangements are very sparse on this. Certain sense of youth springs through as well. 'West End Girls' and 'Suburbia' seem to resonate a fear of a teenager who doesn't know where they are in the world. Fighting against a system that is both overbearing and disinterested. 'I Want A Lover' and 'Tonight Is Forever' are much more personal accounts. While it may be called 'dance' in most quarters, this album has a much more reflective vibe (Something which they only got stronger at on 'Behaviour') and could be used for a light night walk. If you haven't gone past the age of 18 yet, get this now rather than later. It is something you would want to listen to earlier on in life.

The Pet Shop Boys greatest lp, introducing their minimalist techno-pop to the world. Featuring the classic singles West End Girls and Opportunities, it's precision pop is both lovelorn and despairing.
