Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. Her only hit album(No.26) contains her only hit "Bette Davis Eyes" which reached No.10 in the UK. Although Bette Davis Eyes was a classic, the rest of this album fails to live up to it and she never had another hit.
For a #1 album (largely due to the mammoth success of Bette Davis Eyes) this album is pretty underrated. Almost nothing measures up to the classic lead track but as a whole you get a very solid album here and Kim has an unmistakable voice.
