Rating metrics:
Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)
This album has a Bayesian average rating of 71.3/100, a mean average of 69.8/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 71.2/100. The standard deviation for this album is 16.4.

I liked it!
I think that this album is the dark horse of his catalogue so far. Not as eclectic, soulful, or engaging as Continuum, but a solid record nonetheless. It moves so effortlessly that you can't help but submit to its charm. The music is clearly at the forefront here, but the lyrics also make their case as simple yet relatable, cool yet contemplative. I'll admit that some of the songs are a little "wordy," but they don't detract too heavily from the soothing soundscapes and overall tone of the album. Looking back on it now, this was definitely a step in the right direction for his career. I'm excited to see and hear what he does next
John Mayer gave a great talk at Berklee about the songwriting process. One of the points he made was that, just as singers can "over sing," and guitarists can "over play," writers can "over write." This album is a great example of a writer "over writing." He's clearly a talented guitarist and songwriter, and I do like this album. But he just can't seem to stop himself from overwrought turns of phrase (e.g. "don't leave me ninety-eight and six degrees of separation from you"). He might be capable of a great album if he could follow his own advice and edit himself a bit.
I was disappointed when I listened to this album, it sounds like he phoned it in. To make matters worse, many of the songs lack the charm and catchiness that made his debut a mainstay for feel-good car rides. John is finally talking about more serious topics, a stepping stone for Continuum, but his base insight only hurts him here. "Bigger Than My Body" "Daughters" and "Only Heart" keep the album afloat.
Some great songs, but a mediocre listen overall.
I wish I could sound this sincere when I write. John Mayer truly is the King of love letter BS. There are tons of ideas for love letters on this record! "I survive on the breath you are finished with". Damnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!
