Rating metrics: Outliers can be removed when calculating a mean average to dampen the effects of ratings outside the normal distribution. This figure is provided as the trimmed mean. A high standard deviation can be legitimate, but can sometimes indicate 'gaming' is occurring. Consider a simplified example* of an item receiving ratings of 100, 50, & 0. The mean average rating would be 50. However, ratings of 55, 50 & 45 could also result in the same average. The second average might be more trusted because there is more consensus around a particular rating (a lower deviation).
(*In practice, some albums can have several thousand ratings)

This album has a Bayesian average rating of 72.8/100, a mean average of 72.4/100, and a trimmed mean (excluding outliers) of 72.8/100. The standard deviation for this album is 15.8.

The music is as odd as its title. I only own one other Mars Volta album, Octahedron on CD. I wanted one on vinyl and bought this. It is rare that I buy an album which I don’t really connect with. Despite a few listens, I can’t really get into it. It’s at times totally disconnected and at times mad. It sounds like the drummer wants to beat the living shit out of his kit, with total disregard for the other musicians. Annoyingly, it is impossible to identify between sides 1-4 of the four discs. Trying to pick up from the sleeve lyrics is equally impossible. If I want to give my ears and central nervous system a bloody good workout, I may stick this on but one side at a time is enough for me. It’s put me off buying more of their work…

Very hard to digest, but worth it if you can get on board. It's admittedly not their best work, but it has such an insane amount of energy in every single track, like nothing they've ever done before. This album is the work of a band that has made three excellent albums already and is looking for their next move. They've made something different, and listening to this album it's easy to be left behind due to its energy, but the grooves and jams are all still there and they're very tasty. Just don't let Tournaquet Man make you think the album is going downhill.

Highlights: Aberinkula, Metatron.
