End of the 1st quarter on the season already, some thoughts on each division:

NFC East - The NY Giants have been very unlucky. Looked like a promising rebuild was starting last year, but then they lost Cam Skattebo for the season. He returned this year, but then 2nd year QB Jaxson Dart gets injured and lost for the year. Nevertheless, they lead the East at 3-1, and unless one of the other three teams change course, NY may continue to lead. The Cowboys are looking the same as they have the past two years...they score a ton of points, but their defense is weak. My Eagles looked flawed in their 2-0 start, and now those flaws have caught up with them, along with a few key injuries. I'm cautiously optimistic they'll turn things around. The Commanders, who the heck knows?

NFC North - The North is still probably the strongest division in the NFL. Minnesota may be the undefeated team here, but Chicago is the team to watch out for. The Bears are clicking on both sides of the ball, their lone loss came in the game Caleb Williams went down. Still their offense has looked fine with the back-ups. And recall they scored 59 points the one game Williams did play. We'll see what happens when he returns. As for the Vikings, they look solid through 4 games, but their schedule hasn't been impressive (they beat two winless teams by one score). The Lions and Packers are behind in the standings but certainly not out of it. They have the talent and recent track record to get over .500.

NFC South - It appears the Bucs grasp on this division is gone. They blew the lead last year on the final week, and now are 0-4. But that clears the way for the re-building teams to make a splash. The Saints, Falcons, and Panthers have all looked better this year. They're all young teams with exciting talent. I'd say Carolina is the looking the best of the bunch overall. Atlanta looked great yesterday. I drafted Bijan first overall in my fantasy draft and I don't regret that at all!

NFC West - The Rams came into 2026 projected to be the SB frontrunner when they got Garrett and Donald to strengthen their defense. And yet, they've struggled a little bit. A disaster week 1, an injury, plus a tough schedule, and they're 2-2 and sit in third place. They can turn it around though. A comeback win against Philly (ugh) should inspire them. After the Bills this week, their schedule lightens up for the next month. Seattle and SF are looking strong again. Maybe Seattle hasn't looked like the SB-winning juggernaut they were last year, but it's still early. As for Arizona, they're the unfortunate odd man out.

AFC East - Buffalo and New England were the top teams last year with NE winning it. This year, Buffalo exploded out the gate while New England looked vulnerable. But a Pats win in Buffalo Sunday demonstrated they have some of last year's fight. Those two teams are expected to contend for the East while the Jets and Dolphins rebuild.

AFC North - Is Deshaun Watson in Cleveland finally working out? 3-1, atop the division, nobody would have thought that. Let's see how long that lasts. Baltimore is looking good, not great. I think Pittsburgh is gonna fall apart at some point. The Bengals are hanging in there, and can go on a run. Their schedule isn't too difficult.

AFC South - The Texans must be the biggest disappointment in the NFL so far. 5 losses all of last year, 4 already this year. When their defense looks good, they don't score points; when they score points, their defense falters. I don't know what the problem is but it sounds like coaching and game management. If they don't beat the other 0-4 team in the South, the Titans, this week, kiss the Texans season goodbye. That leaves Indy and Jacksonville. Indy looks as average as it gets. Jacksonville should run away with this division and be a contender for #1 seed in the AFC.

AFC West - The Chiefs are back. The NFL and its fans sometimes have a short memory. Many people weren't predicting KC to have a bounceback year. Last year was a disaster for them. They still won 5 of the previous 6 AFC championships; they still have arguably the best coaching staff, and of course Mahomes, back from his 2025-ending injury. Then again, the West has become more competitive in recent years. The Chargers were a consistent 2nd-best team, although they have big problems now. Then came the Broncos, who ended KC's division-winning streak. Denver is off to a slow start, but no reason to rule them out. And now, the Raiders believe it or not. Getting veteran Kirk Cousins has been working out so far. They lost to KC Sunday, but it was a valiant effort, and their fans must be excited. They play a tough schedule though so we'll see.

Rating: 4 Stars

The same recommendation that brought me Haydn's quartet 50/3 also brought me this one. Seeing how brief this was, I was happy to give it a go even though I'd just completed over an hour of Haydn quartets. Vanhal was a contemporary of Haydn's, this quartet being written seven years to Haydn's Op. 50.

So, as I launched into this thing, the first thing I noticed was that this is, as if it was even possible at this point, even more amiable than the first movement in Haydn's Op. 50 #1. Again, like being greeted warmly by an old friend, but maybe a slightly more casual, less deep friendship. The second movement was then a slight shock, but in the best possible way, as it brought some real mystery into the equation, as if to say "okay, so this friend has changed since I last saw him.... how do I now approach this relationship?" The third movement was fine, nothing earth shattering, but served as an adequate closer (this quartet has but three movements). I won't fault it because really, the first two movements raised the bar so high, I can't imagine anyone having a closer fully up to the task. Sill, a very satisfying overall listen, and with less than 12 minutes total investment, it was good pleasure bang for your time buck.

White Town - Your Woman

A complete one out of leftfield, Jyoti Mishra, a British-Indian musician, going under the name of White Town, came out with this, the lead single off his second album, Women in Technology in 1997, with elements funk, dance, house, folk and a sprinkle of alternative on top of that.

The only success he ever really had, it's weirdly hypnotic, and shows up now and again.

Can't place my hand on why I like it, but here we are.

Cheap Trick is a band with a two part career. Part one took place between the mid seventies and the dawn of the eighties, when they were quite possibly the coolest American band in the world. And then there’s everything since, in which they have been a shadow of what they once were. The Greatest Hits is their first compilation album, and it unfortunately spends way too much time on the latter. It contains only two tracks from their much better first five studio albums (“Surrender” and “Dream Police”), and three from Live At Budokan, the album that made them stars. Everything else is from their lesser output between 1982 and 1990, when they stopped being badass rockers and instead made radio friendly pop songs. Yeah…these were bigger hits. But that doesn’t excuse ignoring so much of their great earlier tracks. There’s not a single track here from their first two albums, which is kind of a shame.

This version is the 2003 remastered release, meaning that the live “Clock Strikes Ten” is included. The only previously unreleased track here is a Beatles cover, the outtake version of “Magical Mystery Tour”. And the songs are not in any chronological order, a pet peeve of mine. If eighties Cheap Trick is your thing, you’ll enjoy having flat hits like “Don’t Be Cruel” and “The Flame”. If you prefer the earlier version of this band, stick to their first five albums (including Budokan). The unfortunate part is that the original 2 CD Japanese only version had an excellent first disc that was loaded with 15 songs from the early days…has been out of print for what is now sixteen years. If you can find THAT edition, jump on it. But you’ll rarely, if ever, play the second disc, which is all we’re left with now. Well played, well sung, mostly inferior songs.

My first new prog album of 2026 is a solid winner. Hällas has traditionally sat on the crossover side of prog; in fact, as they settled into their first real groove, I was half expecting Swedish vocalist Tommy Alexandersson's to bust in with a refrain of "it's the final countdown...." Good lord, please no! But thankfully, the song morphed into something with more depth, and it was clear this formerly crossover band was headed for serious neo prog (with a strong symphonic prog foundation) territory. And thankfully, any thoughts of a Europe clone dissipated, and the strongest influence became a very strong Genesis.

So, Gabriel Genesis or Collins Genesis you ask?
The answer is yes. Even Alexandersson's voice sounds like a cross between Gabriel and Collins, which is to my ear a good thing.

Now to be clear, the opening epic and highly theatrical cut, Above the Continuum, clocks in at a whopping 21:29, clearly taking its cue from early Genesis. But when the album transitions to the remaining shorter cuts, one apparently written for big arena rock wall of sound, i got strom images of a 90s Phil Collins belting out big lines from behind his drum kit. And while that's much less my kind of music, it's mostly well composed and always well executed. So overall, I'm very pleased with my first foray into current year prog.

2025 Rating Tournament Diary

I still can't believe it! I’ve embarked on this adventure all over again! And that’s despite the fact that I put the odds of not even being able to give notice of an early tournament shutdown at fifty-fifty!))
Be that as it may, the first round—the most technically challenging one—is already behind us. It wrapped up back on October 1st. But it took me another couple of days just to remember the formatting process and finally publish the results.
I had planned to introduce some rule changes this year. But that would have complicated the scoring for me—something the current unstable state of the world simply doesn't allow for. So, all I can do is hope the stars align and let me run the tournament at least along the same lines as last year. After all, there are times right now when I’m practically navigating with my eyes closed!))
Just as I did last year, I will aim to share my thoughts on the round winners and explain my own entries in each category following each draw.
There is a bit of time before the next round concludes on October 15. Everyone is free to review the entries submitted prior to the first draw. I will also announce the entries submitted for the second round at a later date.

I used to love this quite a lot. Then I got into more actual hiphop and realize that although it's a fine psychedelic soul album, it's a shitty rap album. It's still by far Tyler's best and contains some of the only songs I still would listen to, but in retrospect this also helped usher in a lot of awful pretentious psych-pop that we hear today. 6/10.

After listening to almost 400 current year albums in 2025, a combination of work/family/community commitments... and sheer burnout, had me not only throttling back on my listening, but limiting that listening to old favorites and largely familiar artists. So here in October, I'm just now getting around to my first 2026 album, and it wasn't exactly an easy entry point. This chordless trio led by composer/Salman Chris Madsen roams pretty free for the most part and finding your footing isn't always easy. This is especially true on the opening cut, zdigital Harvest every the trio constantly teases up with a hint of a foundation here and there, but constantly shifting structures act like a sort of musical quicksand... and like quicksand, your best bet is to not struggle against it, but rather feel it out. Which i did.... on the second listen.

After that challenging opener, things settle in a little easier, song by song. To my ear, the album really hits its stride through its middle section. The fourth cut, Hidden Message, kicks off with 1:40 of dramatic drum solo after which the song gets surprisingly introspective. The following song, Dream Music, while still centered of free sax soloing, settles into an easily discernable jazz-blies form that delights the ear. Next comes the quite aptly named Revolving Door. But this isn't an automatic or continuously revolving door, but one that moves only with the randomized flow of traffic passing through it.

A free jazz trio, especially a chordless one, really requires a solid rhythm section, and this group is more than up to the task. Drummer Dana Hall, whether operating in a structured or unstructured moment is always on point and his delivery comes across as more thoroughly musical than merely percussive. Bassist Clark Sommers brings a rare level of expressiveness to upright acoustic bass, especially considering the largely free environment he inhabits.

This album was further out than I expected, but still managed to bring me home in a reassuring way. I'm very pleased with my first 2026 album listen.
