"An album that grows on you. I've never really understood why RHCP has felt it necessary to "funkify" their sound for so long - or rather, at all. To me it's always felt out-of-place'ish, more or less forced, not to mention, unnecessary.

I appreciate the band's drive, good humor, openness and all such positive qualities and then some. But in hindsight, hanging desperately onto funky elements all those years has only managed to hold the band back, never to fully find it's own sound. I don't think RHCP merely reinvented itself in BTW: I think they finally found home.

There are fillers, sure, but that's always the case with RHCP. For some strange (and likely very poor) reason RHCP always crams too much stuff on one record. Maybe they (and the people they choose to collaborate with) have never heard the expression: quit while you're winning."

"When this album first came out, I was bummed because there was no funk and too many feminine sounding harmonies. I listen to it now and realize just how much depth this album has. There are subtleties in these songs that are so simple, yet so beautiful and genius. Then it all closes out with the epic "Venice Queen", which is like a little story book at the end of the album. Very underrated."

"After hearing the live versions of these songs I was just grateful that Jonny and Thom were able to come together and have fun collaborating again with so much passion, creativity and energy. Now, listening to the recorded version, I’m reminded that Nigel Godrich is that extra element that always ties the genius’ together. Tom Skinner also holds his own amongst the highly esteemed company he keeps. There is haunting beauty, political cynicisms, electronic and percussive tinkering, and garage rocking, making it a very eclectic mix. Does it make it a less than cohesive album? Maybe, if you’re picky. This and the fact that 6 songs were drip-fed to us prior to release make it have the feel of a compilation album in some respects. I’ve always preferred an album have one single prior to release, as a taster, before immersing yourself into the full experience of fresh songs and letting that album experience grow on you with repeated listens. This doesn’t detract, however, from the fact that there is a collection of songs here that are all absolute crackers and will keep Radiohead fans content for a while longer until that deeply desired next LP comes around."

"Amazing album. I love how each track feels inspired in its own unique way: none of them is filler by any stretch of the imagination and in every song there's always something interesting going on rhythmically and/or harmonically. There are many different atmospheres and moods shifting through the album: the already familiar A Moon Shaped Pool-esque calmness (Pana-Vision, Speech Bubbles, Open The Floodgates), a more complex, claustrophobic, anxiety inducing mood (A Hairdryer, Thin Thing), a new kind of funkiness (The Opposite, The Smoke) and a more straight-up rock sound (YWNWITA, WDKWTB). Some may find that the diversity between the songs kinda makes the album a bit uneven and scattered. However, I think that the songs flow pretty well into each other thanks to a very good production."

"This surprised me a lot, after following up her critical breakthrough Norman Fucking Rockwell with a couple of substantially weaker albums I figured that Lana's music had peaked and that the still quite decent standard of Chemtrails and Blue Banisters would be the new normal. I think I was about a couple of tracks into this record when I realised that wasn't the case, Ocean Boulevard isn't just a great piece of work but one that elevates the rest of Lana's discography. The opening run of tracks is just as good as on NFR, the effortless emotional build of The Grants, the full production of the title track and the lyrical directness of the second half of Sweet work incredibly together. They also set the stage for Lana's most contemplative and thoughtful album, breaking into new ground while drawing on the fear of being left in the past. This is most successful on A&W which mirrors the lyrical themes of her earliest records but adds some depth to them with its downbeat frustration as she tries to trace the roots of the unfulfilling and demeaning relationships that she used to only cover at a surface level.

For me Ocean Boulevard matches NFR in its earlier tracks but it's deeper into the tracklist that it starts to pull away from it, it stays compelling to the end. There are some especially strong melodies on tracks like Paris Texas and Candy Necklace and a warmth to others like Let the Light In. Each of the tracks I've highlighted has a really effective feature on it, Lana's sense for collaboration is at its best here, we're a long way from unnecessary rap features being stuffed into dull tracks. Only Bleachers doesn't quite pull his weight vocally, but his involvement in Margaret feels fair considering his personal connection to the track. It sets up a great finale as things come full circle with the looseness of the first few seconds of the album being mirrored by the almost conversational conclusion to Margaret.

Except the album just keeps on going and this is still what really confuses me. Fishtail, Peppers and Taco Truck are all really good but they feel like bonus tracks within the structure of the album. I really enjoy the switch up in sound towards something more hip hop influenced, Peppers especially is one of the catchiest tracks of the past year, it's a shame that it just doesn't fit. I think these songs could have made for a really good EP instead of being grafted onto the end of the record, it's a bit annoying though the fact that it stands out so clearly as an issue shows how well the rest of Ocean Boulevard is structured."

"It's a shame because there is easily a 50 minute 9/10 album in here. The first 4 tracks, track 6, and tracks 10-15 are utterly incredible, and on par with NFR. The interludes and the piano ballads in the middle of the album grind the momentum to a halt, and while the "Taco Truck" part of the last track is pretty great, the trap remix of Venice Bitch is a pretty weak way to end the album, and just makes me want to listen to the original version instead. What a missed opportunity."

2026 roadmap

Just a quick quarterly roadmap update (update a month late due to recent updates taking a little longer than planned). I've now been working full time on BEA for the whole of 2026, barring a couple of weeks in January when I took a vacation. An incredible of amount of work has been done, the site is a lot different today compared to the start of the year, even if all items on the roadmap haven't yet been completed.

The existential threat of AI to all content websites hangs as well over BEA, and a big part of this year has been spent on mitigation against that threat and protecting the site from bots. A huge number of changes have been made in the background to this end, not all of it is visible to somebody browsing the site, but the mere fact that the site is able to withstand the extra traffic is a testament to the work that has been done.

Progress versus the roadmap as at the time of writing:

Q1/Q2:

Add Dark Mode option
Allow specific release dates for all albums (pre-2004)
Focus on user onboarding & re-engagement of existing users (ongoing)
ADD: My Charts page reorganisation
Launch site upgrade options (points purchases and subscriptions)
Add a social media presence on Instagram & YouTube to try and expand the reach of the site
Improve disambiguation for artists/albums with duplicate names
Add birthday/death days for artists flagged as individuals (to support anniversaries and tribute posts)
Enable collaborations to be added as members of other collaborations
Allow users to comment/rate the site-wide aggregated charts (Year/Decade/Overall etc) to encourage debate
Enable rich formatting (BBCode) in comments and chart notes (e.g. bold, italic etc)
Daily anniversary posts to the forums (birthday, deaths, and album anniversaries)

Q3+ 2026

List BEA on Apple and Android app stores to mitigate against reduced organic traffic from search engines due to AI prompts (dependant on finances improving for listing fees)
Tagging/mentions of members in forum posts and comments (to enable notifications and easier searching etc)
Expand badges and achievements on user profile pages (ideas to be refined nearer the time)
Filter to show only "Movers & New Entries" within a chart
Allow adding artist genders for diversity tracking and chart composition analysis
Allow inserting of BEA links into comments and chart notes (a la forum posts)
Add "Order by Random" sort option for charts
Re-instate the "Ignore" option for the Collector's Summary (if an album isn't of interest it will be excluded from the summary)
Chart-specific and comment-specific achievements (perhaps worth extra points) to reward quality content (e.g. top-ranked comments/charts)
Add "Mod response notifications" for data corrections
Pagination for interaction lists to improve performance (ratings/comments/rankings etc)
ADD: Threaded comments on album, artist, chart & track pages

In progress (& ongoing):

Continue modernisation of the site and underlying dependencies, including 'friendlier' URLs
Focus on user onboarding & re-engagement of existing users (ongoing/continue from Q1)

Now to explain why some of the items have been performed out of sequence (or not at all yet). AI mitigation is the biggest driver for implementing any change right now. Anything that will counter that threat has been prioritised. The level of threat of AI wasn't really apparent to me before the start of the year when the roadmap was conceived, but has emerged since then. January (during my vacation) was very painful particularly with bots causing downtime crawling all over the site like cockroaches for no real benefit to BEA. This is still happening, but BEA is able to withstand their activity a lot better.

Instagram and YouTube remain important objectives, but they're also substantial projects in their own right. Producing content that's actually worth watching would require stepping away from development for days, if not weeks. I just haven't been able to justify to myself stepping away from here and abandoning other items on the roadmap to dedicate proper time to this yet.

Premium membership as well is a massive task, it might benefit the site financially in a very small way (and may partially fund other improvements and operational costs such as server hosting, Spotify and Twitter/X API costs, email gateway etc), but before asking people to financially support the site, I want to continue making BEA a better place to use. Improving the experience for existing users and making the site more engaging still feels like the higher priority.

There are big data moderation projects happening in the background that have prevented birth/death days and artist genders from happening just yet. BEA doesn't want to overwhelm the people that usually perform most of the data moderation & two big projects have been ongoing for most of the year (assigning release dates for the top 10,000 albums and also verifying all albums on BEA with less than five tracks are over 20 minutes). Once these projects have finished, additional data attributes could be added putting less stress on normal activities.

Now that threaded comments and member mentions have been completed, the groundwork has been laid for a number of related improvements. Features such as BBCode in comments, comment reactions and inserting BEA links into comments should now be much more straightforward to add and will allow several more roadmap items to be ticked off. (This will also bring the functionality of comments more in line with what's available on the forums).

The other features for Q3+ were lower priority at the start of the year and most of these could still be achieved given the time left in the year, but once the new year comes around, priorities will be reassessed from scratch using the ~300 changes in the backlog to inform the goals for 2027.

As ever, thanks to everyone who continues to use the site, report issues, contribute data, post comments and keep discussions alive. BEA has changed enormously over the past year, and there's still plenty more to come.
