Exactly. When used correctly growls, shrieks and gutteral vocals ramp up the stakes and emotional pitch to insane heights. It's near impossible to find a more intense musical experience than Pig Destroyer's Prowler in the Yard or Burning Witch's Crippled Lucifer. And a lot of that is due to the vocals. Music should be a transfigurative experience and even if it takes me to a negative place, if music puts me in another state of mind or place, I feel like it's doing its job well.

Honestly I wouldn't like death metal if it didn't have the growling vocals. It's what makes it hellish. Good death metal should feel like one giant escapade through hell.

(Black metal feels more like walking through a terrible blizzard)

It's what makes me feel uncomfortable about them that I like them. They're unique experiences that cannot be replaced by other music.

I agree with 19loveless91. But I voted for gangsta rap because I relate even less to the lyrics and overall attitude of the genre. Besides, many of the musicians making Death metal are the best I've seen or heard. Especially the drummers. Having said that I can live without all the growling (vocals) of death metal. Just because you scream or growl all of your words doesn't make them more true.

Cellar had a bit of a Dirty Three campaign with "Ocean Songs" which is incredibly good for this method of listening :)

I don't focus on the technical proficiencies too. I just said that because in the first place it's important to know who is doing the stuff you're listening to: some jerks from high school trying to amuse their parents or those who have heard of someone called Beethoven.

I'm doing an MA in English Literature myself, and I try to get personal with analyzing and it transforms the hell into heaven.

out of those I voted for country, though I do like 1 or 2 artists from the genre.

But the worst genre of all is pop punk (ala Green Day, NOFX, Sum 41 etc) but then I do enjoy some Blink so....even there I can't write off a whole genre.

Also I don't get what's to get about post-rock? it's the easiest stuff in the world to listen to. like diving into a cold pool after a hot day 😁

not getting the aesthetic appeal of something and not understanding something are two different questions. I can't think of entire rock genre I don't see some aesthetic appeal in. I don't understand gamelan, most Afro-folk music, the radif, and many other musics but each is aesthetically appealing to me. I also have a very poor understanding of classical.
