If you're thinking of El Scorcho though, keep in mind that they were most likely aping Pavement at the time.

A few months ago, I listened to both and I found I just liked the Blue album a little better. To me, at the end of the day, Weezer is basically a power pop band. That's it! At one time, they were a very good one and over time, descended into mediocrity. Sure they had clever, angsty, often funny lyrics (similar to Green Day or Fountains of Wayne). Now there's nothing wrong with that. I'm not in the Hairy Marx-Art for Art's Sake Camp. I love their first two albums for their catchy melodicism, gen-x slacker angst, and cleverness. The world needs soundtracks for a summer day, but let's be honest. They're not Bob Dylan. They're not The Clash, The Smiths, R.E.M. or Radiohead. They're Weezer. At least, that's my perspective.

I'd rank Pinkerton above any album by those artists you mentioned at the end (with the possible exception of OK Computer). It's true, they weren't musical geniuses. But to me that's what makes it so incredible that their music is so ridiculously catchy.

It's like why I love Nevermind so much. Was Kurt Cobain a genius? Oh, God no. But could he write damn good music? Yes he could. Same thing here, I think.

As I write, Blue has more votes than Pinkerton. Personally, I think there's not much comparison; Pinkerton is classic. The rest of their music is so-so at best... often formulaic, with albums seemingly built around singles. I have to note, too, that I only discovered Pinkerton lately when its re-release scored a 100 on Metacritic. They are easy to dismiss aside from a few songs and all of Pinkerton. There are a good handful of great songs on Blue for sure, though.

Sure, it's fun, but does it really have that much else going for it? I mean, songs like Buddy Holly, Surf Wax America, and In the Garage are a blast, but in addition to having silly lyrics, a lot of the melodies tend to sound just plain goofy, as well. Pinkerton, on the other hand, may not completely escape the realm of silly lyrics, but it does tend to tackle much more mature subject matter, and quite fittingly I feel like its arrangements are substantially more mature, as well.

I don't know, I guess the Blue Album, while fun, just makes them sound like a novelty band to me. Frankly, if it weren't for Pinkerton, I'm not sure I'd take them seriously as a band at all.

Though, for the record, Holiday is my favorite Weezer song (even if it is super silly).

I really love Maladroit. I've never gotten tired of it. Pinkerton is a close 2nd for me, but Maladroit has "Slave", "Burndt Jamb" and a whole slew of other good, less celebrated songs. It has a chill vibe to it that just feels right. Maladroit is the only Weezer album that I use more than once a year.

Haven't listened to all of their stuff ater Pinkerton, but from what I did hear, I could guess that the above statement is correct.

I can't really choose between Pinkerton and The Blue Album. Both are great, among the best albums of the 1990s.

Personally prefer pinkerton, but cant go wrong with either of those first two albums. overall in terms of the band, clearly front heavy, but I do find enjoyment in their later stuff even if it clearly isnt on par with the first two. If you like Pinkerton and Blue I advise you look into the pinkerton deluxe tracks and some of the blue non-album stuff, you can make a pretty solid compilation album out of those.
