i saw them circa 2006 and they came off as an energetic, rockin', guitar-driven version of interpol. i was highly impressed. (they were the opener for who i was there to see.)

I can almost forgive Kings of Leon for their recent crimes against music on the basis that they did make one absolutely perfect song early in their career:

WIth the albums after Aha Shake Heartbreak they went from being slightly average to completely awful.

You described it well. But it's not just about the rest of the world's opinion. It can also be about how one person feels about a band relative to one other person's opinion of the band. If a friend of yours thinks that The Beatles is the worst band ever, and you like them, then you would think that your friend underrates The Beatles.

And yes, one can like an artist and still feel that artist is overrated. Similarly, one can dislike an artist but still feel that that artist is criticised too much, and is underrated.

Voted 'ok'. I know two LPs, Youth & Young Manhood and Because of the Times. The first is better, but Because... has "Charmer", my favourite KoL song, in it. Nothing earth-shattering, but an OK band, although I must confess I never listened to anything they did after Because...

I personally think "overrated" can be used by a person to say that they basically feel that, say, a certain recording is not deserving of being acclaimed by other people or critics as much as it is (it may or may not be popular, but sometimes people include popularity too). It's just their own opinion, of course. It may feel more objective, but in fact it's really the same thing.

You're right about that a bit, it may make for weak minded arguments, but then again its use in music arguments depends on the situation, really, and what's the purpose of that argument.

Not really, I think, I don't think it works quite like a strict formula. But sometimes, reading his rants on the Beatles, even if I do think myself that they are overrated (how much I have changed since I joined BEA 🤣 ), I get the feeling that he HAS got something against popularity, at least a tiny bit. I mean, Jagged Little Pill is one of his favorite 90s albums.

Strokes = No mystery. Hairymarx has, I think, expressed his dislike for them.
Arcade Fire = No idea at all.
Abbey Road = There is a band named Abbey Road???!!! Just kidding, hairymarx says it's the Beatles' most imaginative album (I don't know why)
Simon and Garfunkel = No idea, but he probably thinks they're overrated at least slightly.

There seems to be two kinds of popular in music. The money money type and the sacred artifact that makes one smarter type.

I hope it isn't the case though as such a simple formula as the one above is far too close minded to comprehend. It would be like... not even fashion music. It would be treating it like accountancy.

There has to be individual reasons for each artist.
