Wheedle's Groove is a good documentry from my hometown of Seattle, showing the soul and funk music scenes of the 60s and 70s, well before Nirvana
YES. I was just about to say this one. Their music may not be the best, but they've got one of the most touching stories a band could have, and it doesn't get much "realer" than this. This is about the closest to a real-life Spinal Tap anyone could ever come, but the reality of it make it so much more heart-wrenching.

I also rather enjoy the Classic Albums series (I've seen the ones for A Night at the Opera and Nevermind; both very interesting).

couple of my faves

ANVIL! - THE STORY OF ANVIL - which is just hugely emotional and inspirational.

Link

BEATS, RHYMES & LIFE: THE TRAVELS OF A TRIBE CALLED QUEST - it's always fascinating to see what rappers are actually like.

Link

and of course
THE FEARLESS FREAKS
there's no trailer on youtube so I chose one of the more powerful scenes from it

Link
Heartworn Highways has some great moments, especially a whiskey-induced sobbing session of some old Son House looking dude as Townes van Zandt plays something or other. Also, Fearless Freaks deserves a mention. And there's a great half-hour Wu-Tang doc from 93-94 that can be found as an extra on their video anthology that is well worth watching, some great quotables throughout. And there's a BBC documentary about 1959 jazz that is interesting. But the best ever is No Direction Home, easily.

I recently went and saw "the Million Dollar Quartet" - it was a musical, but not in the usual sense.

It was a representation of a day in 1954, I believe, when Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash were all at Sun Studios together on the same day. It wasn't historically accurate in the sense that they played songs that were released pass 1954, but it was great nonetheless. It was basically a live concert of the 4 of them. The first half, really felt like it could be real, but unfortunately they made a poor choice in the encore and turned it almost into a Vegas show.

Other than that, the Beatles anthology is awesome. U2's Rattle and Hum is classic. Foo Fighter's Back and Forth was quite the story. I like "It Might Get Loud," which is on the guitarists Jimmy Page, The Edge, and Jack White. From the Sky Down is a documentary on the making of Achtung Baby by U2 that was ok.

If you can get your hands on a copy of "Let It Be" the making of documentary that the Beatles originally release to show everyone how they made music (but it blew up in their face) is insightful.

Basically any concert of the greats is worth watching.

With Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, The Band, Buddy Guy, Delaney And Bonnie.

Filmed in 1970 on a train tour across Canada, Festival Express was a disaster. They lost a ton of money, as the shows made no money as fans demanded free shows. The film project was shelved, and the footage was lost until 1999. It was salvaged and released in 2003. There are some great liver performances, but the best are the party scenes from the train. One of the best scenes is Rick Danko and Janis Joplin singing "Ain't No More Cain" in a drunken stupor.

The tour was supposed to have had 5 stops. Montreal and Vancouver were cancelled, and the second stop, in Winnipeg, drew only 4600 people because of a warning from the Prime Minister about potential violence.

Janis Joplin died 3 months after the final show.

I know many Calgarians of the appropriate generation who saw this show when it pulled into Calgary. Apparently it was the highlight of the tour - huge crowd, great vibe, lots of drugs, no problems. There are recordings of Janis' performance - apparently she was on form that show.

It's weird - Calgary in 1970 wasn't exactly a music or culture hub... The kids at this show were probably starving for something like this, and it likely blew their minds.

Now I wanna watch the doc. 😁

Off the top of my head:

American Hardcore- on hardcore punk of course

The Future is Unwritten- about Joe Strummer/the Clash, amazing

There is this great BBC documentary on Krautrock on youtube:

It's really hard to top this one:

Thumbnail. Click to enlarge.

There are several music documentaries I love.

First, the obvious: This is Spinal Tap. We've all seen it, right? If not, respond to this post so I can shoot you.

Then, The Rutles, a great documentary on the best band of the sixties.

On a serious note, I saw an amazing documentary on hip-hop sampling last night called Copyright Criminals. It's really messed up how people can do a note-for-note cover of a song without any trouble, but getting criminally evicted when you take 3 seconds of it to create something brand new!

The Classic Albums documentary for Plastic Ono Band also is incredible. I almost cried at the end. Most of the other ones suck, though.
