'just for fun' charts will come soon, and you can make whatever chart you wish, but it won't count towards the overall ranking.

The site is currently mid-way through completing a membership ladder. There is a lot of history behind this and valid reasons for doing things this way.

Things are a bit of a work in progress at the moment but, by the summer, the ladder should be complete and everything will then make more sense.

I really really hate this level thing. Its so frustrating that I have to goof around on this site until I can have all my charts completed. I mean really guys, come on.

Fair enough too. I only get enough time during the day to look at the site for a half hour or so. Damn school students!

The further down the chart you go, the closer the albums are clumped together, so the placings become less and less meaningful. The album in 1,000th place has 730 points. The album in 2,000th place has 330 points. So albums ranked between 1,001 and 2,000 are separated by only 400 points. The overall chart could be extended, but it's set at 1,000 to be as meaningful as possible for the current volume of data.

I'm not in favour of bigger charts. I think 100 is about the limit where they are still easy enough to read and compile properly. In a future site update, BEA will add 'fun' charts where you can have theme charts, or add other albums that don't quite make the cut into your overall or decade lists.

At the moment, charts over ten years old do not contribute to the rankings and the same will be true for member charts when the site reaches that age. At the moment, the home page just aggregates the latest activity across the site. The rankings in the overall chart don't change that much, so it would likely look a bit static if it was just the overall chart on the home page each time.

I think the idea of adding a time threshold into the custom chart is a good one and doesn't exist at the moment, so I'll add to the list so that you can filter out any chart over x years old so that this is customisable. A big problem with all website surveys is that the site demographic is not perfectly balanced across age, location, gender etc so it's not a perfect sample. I think this will become more obvious as the site grows bigger with some odd selections rising/falling more than they should, and I think it will especially show up when you perform a time filter.

Regards creating other sites based on the same idea, the music site has taken six years and is almost a full time job by itself and was never intended as a commercial venture. To do another type of site as well, I'd need to find a way of monetizing it to justify the time that would be needed to run more than one site. Definitely one for the future. I could see a books one happening more than any other.

btw, you don't have to add an album to get mod points, you can also get mod points by submitting edits from the newly added albums page.

things aren't set in stone, but decade charts are set a bit higher, partly because there is an overhead in looking after the data, and also to stop people creating multiple accounts and flooding the site. It's much more difficult to do this if you have to build your account up.

Yes, bravo to the updates made throughout 2011!

I don't think an app is that critical, I'm able to navigate BEA from my iPod fairly easily. I can't remember if I've ever updated my chart from their or not... but that's not super critical.

Of all the updates that have been suggested, I think the ability to tag an album as a certain genre is the most desirable- it should be given the most precedence. When that does happen, it will be important to narrow down the number of genres possible, otherwise we'll have 1000's of obscure genres. No more than 20 should be allowed, IMO.

And sorry that I've been less active as of late, college applications and such 😜 I should start participating more again soon!

Hey, I joined just 80 days ago, and I didn't even use BEA much for about a week since I joined, so I think it's not a big deal.

Yeah, I think about Level 4 is right, so that, the instant you are given the ability to include 100 albums in your chart, you are also given the ability to create decade charts.
