I think I'm mostly interested in the sounds, moods and atmospheres in music today, and I love music that experiments in these fields. I'd argure that Trout Mask Replica doesn't - that album experiments with the structure and concept of music. But right now it doesn't sound like something really interesting - after I've got used to the its style, its sound just feels empty. But anyways, I own the cd. Maybe one day I'll rediscover it. Some music needs breaks, I guess.

Its an interesting view. I've heard it suggested a few times from different sources that music has evolved in the last century or so to stop focusing on actual composition and to increasingly value atmosphere and mood over everything else.

Trout Mask totally has a cool primitive atmosphere which is integral to the music. And I wouldn't say it "experiments with the concept of music" (far crazier dissonance had been used a lot in jazz/classical by then). However I do agree its focus is definitely on (dissonant) harmony and weird rhythms more than anything else.

Anyways I have been starting to value unique or interesting musical content (however I choose to define it) as being in many cases very important/valuable. Certain albums that have neat production/moods but no compositional creativity can sound just as empty as the opposite you described.

None of this has anything to do with the thread topic, I am just babbling for my own enjoyment.

good call, any music can wear out, the beatles included. they definitely dont sound as good as they used to to me. i may have even lowered there ratings in my chart, but i try look at the music objectively, if possible, and realize that albums like "revolver" deserve that #5 spot (as far as i know now)

As for the thread topic: there are lots.

I still love them and keep them on my chart, but I don't listen to Tom Waits, Dead Kennedys or The Clash nearly as much as I used to.

Fleet Foxes I have not listened to in like a year, their debut was once one of my favourite albums.

I still like Joanna Newsom a lot, but I listen to her music less and less; Ys has left my overall chart, and Have One On Me might not stay that much longer. The appeal has faded a little for some reason.

I'd hate to say this, but very slowly, Trout Mask is being like that for me, too. Not because of the music itself; I think that what he did was absolutely ingenious, and at it's best, an absolute joy to listen to.

The problem is, the album has so much filler, and not enough time signature changes.

Other albums that I'm sad to see leave my chart include:
*Billy Joel-The Stranger
*White Stripes-White Blood Cells (still in my top 20, but only because I have faith that it's greatness will return to me)
*The Beatles-Abbey Road
*Radiohead-OK Computer
*Kelly Clarkson-Breakaway
*Carole King-Tapestry
