The first time I heard Joy Division was the session they did for John Peel on the BBC when I was 17. The session was released on vinyl in about 1981 and the 12 inch vinyl played at 45RPM (45RPM 12 inchers always sounded better than their 33RPM counterparts).

The session the band did for Peel blew me away. If you want to hear Joy Division at their very best, this is the vinyl release to hear. At that point in time, I hadn't heard a sound like it with the exception of perhaps PIL's 'Metal Box'.

I subsequently became aware as to where they were coming from in terms of their influences (Velvets, Doors, Neu! etc). But their sound was groundbreaking to a teenager who up until that point had been raised listening to my uncle's MOR AOR collection.

On the strength of hearing that John Peel session, I bought Closer which was the first album I heard from the band. There is little to choose between this and Unknown Pleasures in my view. I opt for the former purely for sentimental reasons.

Both are brilliant albums. UP is probably easier to listen to, and maybe this is why it has grown on me really quickly while I couldn't get into Closer for a while. Closer is the album I had to listen to more to understand it and I have to be in a special mood to listen to it.

I can't decide, I would give both albums 100/100.

Can't really compare them but if I wanted to say sth I would say that while number of tracks on UP are one more than Closer, I have more favorite tracks on Closer.

Considering how mundane the end of the Joy Division story was.

Both are great of course, but UP is slightly better.
Also, Closer as a whole is not THAT bleak.

Unknown Pleasures has possibly my favorite/the greatest ever song in Disorder on it,that's what separates it for me and is the difference between 95/100 and 100/100.Everything else leaves them neck and neck in my opinion.

in my top 500:
-Joy Division - Unknown pleasures (129#)
Unknown Pleasures is brilliant too, but I find it more accessible in a way, and it won't get me down.
