Wow, this matchup was a battering. And perhaps a shot in the foot for the "older year always wins" conspiracy theorists. Although that 1984 team was poor.

98 for the strongest set of albums and inspired use of singles, though Purple Rain and Treasure (and yes, "Creeping Death") we're very fine 84 selections

I don't see Sonic Youth as that divisive at all... I agree it is probably a bit ill-advised to put those other three in the same team, at least on BEA, which doesn't have many metal fans hanging around.
But I am baffled at how people are only mentioning Purple Rain from the 1984 selection. Treasure is one of my favourite albums

Also, I'm not giving enough credit to joyofdivision and 1998. XO and TNT are both magnificent albums. As I said, I think there are a dozen better hip-hop albums from '98 than Hello Nasty, but it's still a strong choice. Not so big on Gomez, but that Stardust song is a great choice for the single and brings back memories.

Definitely 98. 1984 was a pretty great year as I seem to recall, especially for American and British indie rock I guess those artists are on the bench this round. 🤔
