Well, now that it's over....

Good game. Saoirse (the member formerly known as Another Green World 2), you were a worthy opponent and put up a great team. I congratulate you on your victory. ðŸ'

Also, I've been listening to Hospice a few times lately, and I admit, it's a great album. 🤤 I dissed The Antlers in a posting I did a while back on another thread. I take it back now. 🫢

I've also listened to that Grizzly Bear album... and I gotta tell you, I really don't get the appeal of that band yet. I hear mostly arty farty soundscapes and very little song composition, which is what I prefer. Maybe I'm missing something. I'll keep trying, but right now, I perceive it as boring self-indulgent music. Sorry.

In a way, I'm glad about the result because I think we can finally put the oldest year always wins / the 2000's are unappreciated theories to bed. Can we finally, please? 🙏

Not gonna slack in promotion, so here goes:

In pop culture, any year in the later half of the sixties are viewed with glowing admiration, a sort of you-had-to-be-there thrill ride which is culturally unmatched. 2009, non-musically speaking, was a year many want to forget. But these four albums I think sum up all those intense feelings about that difficult year perfectly. Hospice may just seem like an old-fashioned melodrama, but it speaks volumes about how a complacent working public (the nurse) can break out of their shell and come to care deeply for someone (the dying patient, or metaphorically their society's well-being) who's being destroyed by forces beyond their control (ie mass layoffs/economic collapse). Wind's Poem taps into a sort of escapist fantasy, where one might dream about ditching society and heading off into an isolated natural paradise, but Mount Eerie shows how there is no real escape from the troubles within your own mind, of which can be as equally ominous as problems one might encounter in the civilized world. However it's not one-sided; he also shows the harsh beauty that can be found in nature and ultimately comes to celebrate human's ability to adapt back into the natural world without the conveniences of modern society, as difficult and brutal as that journey may be.

Vecktamist perfectly captures the many grey feelings people we're feeling at the time (and still are); with perfect understatement and a wealth of ideas it doesn't only pinpoint a specific mood or feeling of it's listener; it can pinpoint their many different ways of thinking. And It's Blitz is the most immediate of the four; all about purging your demons on the dance floor and having a blast doing it, while also hitting all those softer, warmer moods you experience on the slightly woozy morning after. Hard to think 2009 can be expressed any better; and even with all the outside problems going on it shows the absolute necessity (and rather cathartic ability) of a great musical soundtrack to get you through the worst of times.

This '66 line up is great and here's why: 1966 was the year that The Rolling Stones and The Kinks finally caught up to the Beatles in terms of album quality. Both made the first really consistently great album of their careers.

The Kinks had basically been a garage band up until then, and very good one, but with Face to Face, another influence, that of British Music Hall started to come to the fore. Ray Davies was starting to address social realities in his writing and celebrate Englishness, albeit with a certain tongue in cheek ambivalence, and in my view, The Kinks basically invented what would come to be known years later as Brit Pop on this album. Play this album and Modern Life is Rubbish or Parklife and tell me Blur wasn't influenced big time by The Kinks. Check out some of these great tracks:

A funny story about a commercialized Hawaii:

Link

Even the Kinks were influenced by Indian music:

Link

One of the Kinks gems:

And then you had the Rolling Stones, who had basically been a straight forward blues inflected rock and pop band previously. And you can't tell me that the lead off track isn't one of the most bad ass garage rock songs ever. They are the epitome of a great cult band that deserve another look.

Hairymarx1 wrote "This is probably the archetypel psychedelic album. Combining Roky Erikson's cerebral lyrics and Stacy Sutherland's trademark 'electric jug' fuzztone/reverb guitar (which was the cornerstone of their arrangements), the Elevators create a unique ethereal folk-rock and rhythmic-boogie 'garage' sound with hints of Tex-Mex. This album is a kind of deranged 'acid' trip version of the Rolling Stones."
