Seems that this thread became about social media in general, but I didn't really read it all. But to answer the question, I usually take a picture or two, and maybe a 30 second video on my phone. But it's simply to have on my phone and keep as a memory of the show. I've never posted pictures/videos on facebook or anything like that.

And I absolutely hate it when you're stuck behind someone that is constantly on their phone during a concert, especially when they are holding it up high above the crowd taking a video, when it's directly blocking your view of the band. I mean I love going on youtube and seeing live footage of my favorite bands, but 9 times out of 10 I watch the relatively professional videos as opposed to camera phone videos that are typically poor quality both in sound and video.

Twitter is for followers. And that's all I will ever care to say about it.

As far as shows, I don't care if people post things and record videos and take pictures. At least they aren't yelling at their friends over the music for the entire show. There's nothing more irritating than people at a show trying to talk over the band. Go to a bar. Go stand outside. In traffic, preferably.

I try and limit myself to like 1-2 pictures and like 1-2 tweets but i usually dont even do that because i go hard at concerts. I like having a little social networking. you know everything is good in moderation.

To answer your question: We don't need it. We don't need social media to function. But we don't need cars or computers or phones either.

My point is, that we project images onto other people all the time. Every interaction with a person, we are putting on some sort of behavioral shift to counteract situations. Sure this happens on social media. We want to look cool on the internet for others to see. But we do it in person wayyy more. The way we dress, speak, the things we do. In essence it's all an act. There's nothing wrong with it; all of these projections make up who we are.

Any interaction with any one in any way is a connection. If someone is being completely fake to your face, it's a connection. If you are talking on facebook with someone, connection.

Personal contact IS a better means of connecting, but social media is a decent substitute.

Necharsian wrote:

Projection goes deeper than just trying to hide your feelings.

I never said that it didn't. My arguments are not based around just people hiding their feelings. I don't believe higherthanthesun said this either.

Necharsian wrote:

The way you act around your drug dealer is different than how you act around your mother. Both are projections. Both are a part of you. It's the same with social media. Sure people pick and choose what they post, but it's the same as picking which words to say when telling a story to a group of friends.

Once again, I never denied that people choose masks and images in real life. The point is it is easier and more obviously done via social media, or any internet forum for reasons I already outlined and described, which you have not refuted. You can online be totally conscious of and plan large portions of what you say. And since it has not been countered in any way I repeat from my last post:

Quote:

it is a lot easier to dissect someone in real life (tone of voice, body language, general demeanour ect.). Unless you are a fantastic actor or psychopath, your not going to be constantly conscious of everything you are doing to maintain a mask.

Not only that, but the very act of say, designing a profile on facebook, encourages creating an image. Not that real life things don't do that, but via the internet it will as already stated easier to make that mask and harder for other people to see through. If you choose to, it is far easier to create such an image through social media than it is without.

And lastly you have not given any attention to Higherthanthesun's posts about people living their lives through facebook. I don't believe your going to deny no one does this.

Now:

Necharsian wrote:

If its coming straight from a person (aka a celeb on twitter, or gossip straight from your best friends mouth) you are getting to know that person in some small aspect. Whether its a projection or not.

I'm not arguing following someone on twitter is a stronger connection than knowing them in person (because it isn't). But it is a connection nonetheless.

Also, "stupid and hilarious" was what I personally like, not an overall thesis of what social media should be about.

Ok, good to know you don't think it is a deeper connection, I didn't think you did, but you never specified. Their is no obvious way of logically coming to a conclusion about how real what you are reading is. How are you still getting to know that person if it is a projection? That does not follow logically. You may feel you are getting something out of them, but that would be false, believing something when it is a deception does not make it true.

The other problem here is of course, even if it was a true connection or knowledge of some person, what benefit would you gain from said connection? It might be as you said just entertainment, "stupid and hilarious things". But if they are just posting funny shit, I doubt your getting any insight into who they are or their personality. No one is just a comedian all the time.

Still, an argument over the entertainment value of social media is far more likely to be convincing. As I have already discussed, social media generally isn't the best forum for deep thought, you said as much yourself. As I have demonstrated, the "connection" is not likely deep, it is logical to assume it could not actually exist, and even if it did, its benefits are sketchy. But finding entertainment from these things, stupid and hilarious things, I don't doubt is possible, I bet you could show that. It doesn't even contradict my original complaint that people use social media for annoying reasons and purposes.

You have not given any attention to the idea that these things will become an advertising vehicle. Which is more than logical, because companies/whatever are always trying to advertise in ways that people don't believe are adds. It would not be logical for say a musician or actor to put down their latest film or album, they will promote it. Adds are not interesting.

You have also not replied to the question of why we need millions of people doing this, posting that stuff ect?

Oh ok yourselfisntsteam sort of did that a bit 🤣

Agree with most above though, everyone has an impression they want to give to others, they have an idea of what they want other people to think of them and it often doesn't tally with who they actually are. Thing is you can spend hours and hours making a fb profile that is the exact image you want but people just don't care when they see you in real life, the way they remember you will be from when they last met you and the way you acted.

So I think the whole exercise is pretty pointless.

I don't see how you could blame social media for creating an illusion of a glossy lifestyle. People do that all on their own.

Everytime you leave your house you put on a mask that is what you want others to see you as. If you think that's false, you're dense.

I mean seriously, I follow Zach Braff on twitter because it makes me feel better about myself? WTF?

Your kind of ignoring what I said earlier: I never said social media was the cause of people doing that, I said it allows people to do that and people can and will choose to use it like that (remember the mcdonald's analogy). And anyways, I was responding to the fact that you specifically said it gives you a "connection" to (famous) people. I was pointing out that it doesn't for the reason that people project. And quite frankly as Higherthanthesun points out, it is a lot easier to dissect someone in real life (tone of voice, body language, general demeanour ect.). Unless you are a fantastic actor or psychopath, your not going to be constantly conscious of everything you are doing to maintain a mask. Their are part of my personality I have tried to hide/don't often express, yet people somehow still figure them out.

I agree, my line about people feeling better about themselves was not necessary and a little presumptuous. Though once again, why do we need a (false) "connection" to famous people? My impression is that for many people this sort of grasping for "connection" is an attempt to find meaning and worth because they can't anywhere else. Of course I am not inside other people's heads. If you just enjoy following them for some entertainment/humour, well thats a different thing, which is the contradiction I was pointing to: deep "connection" or "stupid and hilarious"? You switch from what one is your main point of view depending on the interests of your argument.

I don't think anyone's saying it's facebook's fault, just the way some (a lot) of people choose to use it. People obsess about what their profile says about them and it's not healthy. When you can't leave the house without taking a picture of whatever you're doing and posting it to facebook I think there's something wrong. Enjoy yourself with the people you're with without having to let the people you're not with know exactly what you're doing and what a great time you're having etc.

Because in reality nobody gives a fuck about your facebook page, when people meet you in real life they get more of an impression (and a more genuine one) of you in 5 seconds than they would looking at your facebook profile for hours.

Bit of a strawman argument about following people on twitter, don't think anybody ever bashed that.

Most people I know my age have it, the vast majority. I did actually delete my account 6 months ago cos I got sick of it but I joined again just recently, it's already driving me mad to be honest but I can't stop myself logging in every few hours to check notifications 😕

I think I'll stick with it for a while, it is genuinely useful for keeping up to date with people you don't see as often as you should, and if friends are the other side of the country it makes it easier to keep in touch.

Wouldn't say it's weird that your friends don't have it, I know several people who don't.

It's just the people who live their lives on facebook drive me mad.

Subscribe to National Geographic if you want that. I think some people fall into this mind set that everything needs to be useful and thought provoking. I'd much rather be hilarious and stupid and talk about hilarious and stupid things.

What twitter does is that it creates a personal connection between you and someone else (someone who you may not be able to actually know in the flesh, eg a celebrity). The Einstein on twitter example was not meant for him tweeting "E=mc^2" it was meant for him to tweet what we don't know about him. ie regular life. If he tweeted "going to get me some bitchez tonight" that would be way more interesting to me. We get to see him from a perspective that would otherwise be lost. Everyone knows him as an insanely smart guy, but little else.

Well, theres the basic difference....I really don't give a shit about what some random person, say band member of band I like is doing at any given moment. On a personal level it just does not interest me. I don't even find it interesting on a "hilarious and stupid level" (you have to points to your argument, they seem separate, but the historical importance learn more about people side doesn't necessarily flow with the to the "I care about hilarious and stupid things", you might contradict yourself, only a little though)

You were starting though from a historical perspective...I agreed that say knowing more about say einstein's day to day life would be of interest, but my point is do we need to know that millions of people are "going to get me some bitchez tonight" (ugh that sentence makes me cringe)?

I'm not a completely cold pseudo-intellectual, I like funny stuff, I like stupid/pointless things, but sometimes I don't like things which are aggressively vacuous, or I feel insults people's intelligence. Reading something like "going to get me some bitchez tonight" gives me that impression. Also I can do stupid/hilarious things in real life with friends/family just fine.

I'm not sure the personal connection bit holds. What, so we need to feel connected to blank celebrity's life to feel like our lives matter? And on another level, its a bit of a false connection, you don't necessarily know that your friends/celebrity is doing exactly what they are saying. It goes back to what I said about creating an image, people will choose what they post, they will leave out things they don't want, choose what they share. Social media is not a journey into someone's brain or necessarily an accurate representation of someone's day too day life. And in the case of anyone famous/mildly famous, it can and probably will become a tool to show how great they are and project the image they want in order to sell whatever they are involved with. Adds don't interest me. Its a pretend, make believe connection.

...now I use facebook because pretty much everyone else does and it is pretty useful for keeping up with what other people are doing who you don't see so often aswell as arranging stuff with people who you do.

Trouble is alot of people see it less of a tool for communicating with friends and more of an edvertisement of how cool their lives are. They can't go out without taking pictures for facebook just so that everybody else knows that they were out having a good time, well who gives a fuck? I swear a lot of people only do the stuff they do so they can upload the photos onto facebook and let everyone else know about it.

Taking pictures in clubs, on nights out, at gigs etc is not cool in my book. Forget about facebook for one fucking moment and enjoy yourself.

Twitter isn't about "deep thoughts" or intellectual discussion.

Everyone knows him as an insanely smart guy, but little else.
ok, let me rephrase myself, I dislike the way peers/friends/random people choose to use social media. The format of social media does tend to encourage people to use them in that way. I'm not blaming mcdonalds for fat people, I'm complaining that people keep making themselves unhealthy by eating bigmacs all the time. And while I don't expect/vehemently want mcdonalds to not exist, it is true that if it didnt exist people wouldnt be able to eat the big macs. The analogy isnt totally accurate in that nothing at mcdonalds is useful, but I don't want to say social media is inherently useless, just it allows, and generally is used in useless ways.

Necharsian wrote:

and you're missing the point on what social media is all about.

Potentially. 🤣
I don't mean to pass damning judgement on people who like these things, just my personal cynicism/pessimism/whatever.

Necharsian wrote:

I'm a strong advocate for twitter. It's like a personal journal. Future historians would love seeing what people were saying in the past. Imagine if Einstein or Aristotle had twitter. We would be all over that.

Well, twitter condenses, and forces what one can say into however many characters right?? Its hard to contribute deep thoughts like that, unless your linking to something else, at which point it starts to become just a tool for advertising different things. Does that constrain our thought, what we can say? In the same way that Television fixes us into having attention spans built around half hour segments? Aristotle tweeting something like "yo, virtue is like when you hit the middle point between extremes on something" is not nearly as useful as actually reading one of his books...and do we need to read him saying "working on the Nicomachean ethics right now" or "buy my new book!"? (I think they were actually more like lecture notes or something, but you get my point)

And also, as has been said a million times, the internet in general for all its benefits can become a tool for anyone to say something whether they should be saying it or not. does the world need my specific list of the greatest ever albums? Not really. Would historians like this kind of record of how people behaved/live/thought (not necessarily accurate because of how we manufacture images but whatever)? Yes. do they need millions and billions of people documenting insignificant things to a degree that no one will ever sort through them all? debatable I'd say.
