We've discussed this before, although it's nice to see a fresh take on things. The conclusion before was that most people like the flexibility of using their own system, and trying to enforce a global standard wasn't a very popular idea (the majority opinion might have changed, but I suspect not).

Yes, comparing ratings between users is not always like for like, but even accounting for different people's generosity/leniency/bias etc, you also have to factor different people's music knowledge etc, so there is more than one factor that can account for variations in rating, and the system itself is only part of the story.

Of course it's subjective, especially something like this site where the system is open to interpretation.

I haven't used the rating system much here, but in a general 10 point scale, I use this guideline:

0: I feel punished listening to it
1: I hate it
2: I really dislike it
3: I dislike it
4: I mildly dislike it
5: I am ambivalent about it/have mixed feelings
6: I mildly like it
7: I like it
8: I really like it
9: I love it
10: I can't live without it

I've rated albums on RYM that way and have used those ratings to further fine-tune my ratings by apply kernel density estimation. 🤣

I rate it based on how much I enjoyed it. Probably not the best system but I like being honest about music.

Wow! Mine seem to be a lot different than most of you guys.
Here's basically my breakdown

100 is divine,
90-95 is damn close to perfection
80-85 is still amazing
70-75 is really good to great,
60-65 is good,
55 is decent,
50 is average
40-45 is just below par
30-35 is just bad
anything less is just awful

Admitedly I have rated very few albums below 50. And only 2 less than 30.

And I also have certain albums that I associate with each ranking. Just to make it easier to compare the quality of albums. (For example Funeral is my standard 70 ranking).

Right now my average rating is exactly at 75/100 without trying which is perfect because with few exceptions I try to grade on a traditional A-F scale, F being 50, and special exceptions being rated below.

The rating system definitely differs for everyone. Mine all stems from my top 100. I think I have 4 or 5 that are 100 out of 100, maybe about 10 that are 95...and the lowest rating in my top 100 is maybe a 75 or 80? So basically that led me to a 75 still equaling a very good and enjoyable album. 65-70 is above average. 55-60 average to slightly below. Anything below 50 sucks goat balls.

But again I'm sure this differs substantially from the way a lot of other members rate.

I usuallyate my albums based on two things: how much I enjoyed them, and how successful the album is at what it tries to do. If I get the feel X wants to make a pop album and Y an avant garde one, I'll judge X more on the melodies and harmonies and Y more on the originality of the ideas. But basically, if it's 70 or more, I liked it. If it's 95 or 100, that's in my hall of fame.

Also, you could try to check the average ratings for each user to see more or less how people measure their rankings

Rating system is not defined and you need to build your own. I think that every member of BEA have own system and probably they are not comparable.

I used to rate things in such a way where if I didn't enjoy the album, or if it got old or whatever, I'd rate it below 50. If I enjoyed the album and returned it it, it got above 50. If I couldn't finish listening to the album, I either wouldn't rate it or I'd give it a 10 or lower. My average rating was around 50, but if I were to hypothetically listen to every album in the world, the average rating would probably turn out lower than 5/100, cause that's life.

I've deleted all my ratings now since I think it screws with my head a bit. I prefer to keep things vague and unsettled.
