I quite liked that album, but she's a very limited rapper. Luckily she has a sincere voice, and the production was top notch. But in terms of lyrics and flow she is not good. I sort of felt sorry for her though, because Big Dada (her label) clearly hadn't anticipated her winning the award and did not get enough copies into shops in the days (weeks) following the prize. By the time they'd printed more copies, the hype had died down. Pretty sad really.

The result of the Mercury Prize was ruined 🙁 I should have found out else where.

I have copy of that album but I haven't listened to it yet. Might try tonight.

Above 3 lines make it seem like this prize is a big deal to me 😐

Least relevant "prize" in music. No-one knows who Speech Debelle is, and one year the winner wasn't even British. I'm no patriot, but what's the point of the award if you're going to give it to a New Yorker? And Alt-J are fucking awful. My choice would've been Shackleton's Music For The Quiet Hour or Mala's Mala In Cuba (although I have some reservations about an album recorded in Cuba featuring Cuban musicians and sounding pretty fucking Cuban winning a British music award) or maybe even Wiley's Evolve or Be Extinct. More likely winners that I wouldn't have been too aggrieved by include Richard Hawley, Spiritualized (how on earth were they not nominated?) or Django Django at a push (despite my earlier comment in this thread). Christ, there's been a real dearth in British music this year. And, to reiterate, Alt-J are pants.

I've heard six of the albums. What a shocking list. My pick would be Django Django. There's a real dearth of decent British music at the moment I guess. Considering how good a year 2012 has been, Britain needs to step its' game up.

I've only heard 8 of them and I liked two.Those were Django Django and The Maccabees both their albums are great,Lianne La Havas's album is okay as well.But Plan B,Alt J,Field Music,Jessie Were and Ben Howard's albums aren't for me.
