I think there's some unknowledge (gimme a break, I'm drinking) here about what "selling out" might be. It's an overused term that often doesn't apply to groups that many people think it applies to. Bands are almost always making music that they want to play (e.g. Metallica and (as much as I hate them (look at that bracketing!)) Green Day). Whereas some groups are meant to be commercial upon release (e.g. KISS (though Animalize is the greatest record of the past three decades (more awesome bracketing!)) and Crazy Town). What I'm trying to say is: (1) often groups sell out before they even release a record; (2) groups that move to big labels (e.g. Sonic Youth and Nirvana) simply see a larger record label as a larger platform on which to allow more people to listen to their music; and (3) groups that change their sound to something "more mainstream" or "different" evolve their sound based on personal preference, rather than sales.

BTW, I don't think Metallica has released a poor album, sans Load and Death Magnetic... and even those aren't that bad

It can be argued that Bruce Springsteen sold out with Born in the U.S.A. Especially coming right after Nebraska.

It's often tough to decipher between a bands sound simply evolving and a band selling out for the $$. I stand by my Sugar Ray and Goo Goo Dolls post from the beginning of the thread.

I think it would be safe to say that Weezer and Green Day sold out, but they never had as many album sales as their early days so is it really selling out? Ehh, whatever.

I disagree. Some of the musical changes that bands go through to become popular are undeniable. Metallica absolutely sold out with The Black Album. It was still an incredible album, but the fact remains the same.

I suppose my problem lies with the "band changes their sound" + "band's new sound is popular" = "Sell outs" equation.

I have no idea how people get this mind-reading power to see what Coldplay or Metallica were thinking, but I don't have it. I tend to give the band the benefit of the doubt and just adhere to the possibility that they actually enjoy playing with a different sound.

Hmm.. I disagree. Some of the musical changes that bands go through to become popular are undeniable. Metallica absolutely sold out with The Black Album. It was still an incredible album, but the fact remains the same.

To me, there's a definite difference between this usual story and those that purposefully seek out selling more albums no matter the consequence. Rod Stewart keeps coming up as a prime example. Radiohead "sold out" according to the above narrative, but i don't consider them sellouts. Reality per artist swings between the Radiohead-Rod Stewart pendulum. But the Rod Stewart side is more truly "selling out" in the ridiculed and deplorable sense (even if i like some of Rod's pop pap).

It's totally cliche to say it at this point, but Metallica definitely sold out by hiring Bob Rock (who they knew had produced Motley Crue's Dr. Feelgood)
Kiss definitely sold out. Gene Simmons will do anything for money.
I love Alice Cooper but he'll also do just about anything for money and exposure. I guess that's kind of his showman style though.

Yeah they kind of remind me of Incubus in the sense that chronologically, each album has taken a large step towards the mainstream. Sounds like this one might be all the way there.

After hearing Muses new song, I think they are on the road for qualifying as a sellout as well.
