I still think Inglourious Basterds should have won best screenplay. I can't expect it to take home all the awards I thought it deserved but it was the most well written movie of 2009.

I didn't.

I wasn't awed by the visuals - impressed to some extent but far from awed. Didn't think for a project Cameron spent over a decade on that his world was all that well fleshed out (a planet with only around a dozen species of animal?). Story was weak and clicheed. Main characters lacked real depth and seemed like generic sci-fi archetypes.

Came away wishing I'd waited for the (non-3-D) DVD.

I'm hurt that Where the Wild Things Are got completely ignored. I'm also a little annoyed that critics keep framing the "Hurt Locker vs. Avatar" debate as art versus money. Avatar was a powerful movie and deserves to be considered among the best this year. I think Avatar will win it, but Inglourious Basterds was probably my favorite.

Will win: The Hurt Locker- I guaranty it
Should win: The Hurt Locker or Inglourious Basterds- both great

Films that should have been nominated for Best Picture: Fantastic Mr. Fox and In The Loop, which were both extremely good, and funny. I've no idea how the Blind Side could get in over either of those two.

1. Inglorious Basterds---this movie is so damn good. So...tense and funny at the same time, god this better win
2. District 9---This movie was also really really good. I'd be happy if it won
3. The Hurt Locker---Simple but wrenching. This will probably win
4. Up
5. Star Trek---this is just a blast. Impossible not to like
6. Avatar---awesome experience, but the plot and acting were fairly average and therefore I don't think it deserves best picture.
7. Moon---the most underrated gem of this year
8. Up in the Air
9. Invictus
10. Fantastic Mr. Fox---just cuz of the cello music 😄

Have Not seen Precious, Crazy Heart or An Education

Blind Side should NOT have been nominated.

Last year, as much as I liked Slumdog Millionaire, I think Milk, Frost/Nixon and Benjamin Button were all better.

I just saw the Hurt Locker, An Education and A Serious Man. The latter two for the second time. I preferred A Serious Man. The Hurt Locker is not entertainment IMO. An Education was okay but nothing more. A Serious Man is one of the funniest movies of 2009, particularly if you're Jewish. My choice for the Oscar is Avatar.

I think it would have. It also won, among others:

Annie Awards-Best Animated Feature
Golden Globe-Best Motion Picture: Comedy/Musical
KCFCC Award-Best Animated Film
it's true, but in 1991 the category best animated movie didn't existed...i'm not sure that if it was the case, Beauty and the Beast have been anyway nominated in the best picture category.

it's a big recognition for Pixar and for animated movies in general. i think that it's the first time that an animated movie is nominated in "best movie". even if i do prefer Avatar but i'll be glad too if Up wins.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - The science-fiction sensation “Avatar” and the war-on-terror thriller “The Hurt Locker” lead the Academy Awards with nine nominations each, including best picture and director for former spouses James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow.

For the first time since 1943 the Oscars feature 10 best-picture contenders instead of the usual five.

Also nominated for best-picture Tuesday: “District 9”; the animated comedy “Up”; the World War II saga “Inglourious Basterds”; the football drama “The Blind Side”; the recession tale “Up in The Air,” the 1960s drama “A Serious Man,” and the teen tales “An Education” and “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ By Sapphire.”

I love how film critics equate certain movies to the impact that we get when wars are won or social barriers are crossed. Case in point: "Avatar was a triumph of cosmic proportions for mankind." Really? Did Avatar cause all government members on both sides of the aisle to wear 3D glasses and come to terms on what we need for Health Care Reform?
But with such a dearth of good stuff (depending on your opinion of course) Why is a great film like Moon not even mentioned (only Harkan on this thread mentioned it)- surely Oscar fodder, regardless of genre, subject matter, or even if you like it or not, one bloke acting two parts and carrying the whole film by himself is usually lapped up by the Academy.
I haven't seen this yet, but in general the oscars don't pick artsy films: they pick popular films that have quality in acting, directing, etc and (maybe) play with film tropes. You could hold the greatest experimentation and execution in and of film in front of their faces and they won't give a damn if it isn't popular. Taxi Driver lost to Rocky; Raging Bull lost to Ordinary People; every decent movie of 2008 lost to Slumdog Millionaire (very good movie, but come on).

I just saw Inglorious Bastards and I hope to Jesus that this wins best picture; it should have won over Avatar in the Golden Globes. It is a return to genius for Tarantino since Pulp Fiction, and its more mature; for all the praise everyone gives Pulp Fiction, I can't believe this movie didn't make those same critics gasm.

But, I still have not seen Crazy Heart and Moon 🙁
