1980 in music was a blast. It's also impossible to see how the music scene would be today without this team of albums:

Talking Heads- Remain in Light

Both a sonic personification of true studio wizardry, and a testament to how to be able to mash together nearly every quirky and exotic musical genre and put out an album that's not only really stunning but remarkably cohesive and focused, and it's attack can alternate between being both subtle, funny and just being completely bonkers, and at it's best "Remain in Light" exemplifies all three of those qualities at the same time.

The Feelies- Crazy Rhythems

Defines the term "Wired Masterpiece". Only briefly do words actually appear on the record, but never do they feel superflous. With "Crazy Rhythems" it's all in the tension. Just listen to those remarkalby speedy, angular riffs and it shows that the mind of a shy, creative, proudly nerdy genius is like trying to drive on an endlessly zig-zagging highway... really, just listen, only the music itself can really state it's genius.

X- Los Angeles

It's possible to argue endlessly over how much X really kickstarted a pivotal american musical movement, but perhaps it's more beneficial to look at it's actual musical qualities and how it showed that punk could indeed offer more than fast, three-cord songs and actually tackle much more ambigious subjects, in this case the notorious megacity of LA being the star attraction. And musically it's as skillful as it is powerful; there was as much talent as passion and instead of just being an album of the moment it becomes a classic chronicle of a time and place that every new punk fan can not only admire it's importance but actually learn from, musically, as well.

David Bowie- Scary Monsters and Super Creeps

Noted most for the supposedly closing of rock's rock-opera era, perhaps a better way to look at it is that "Scary Monsters" shows every arty misfit how a hard rock opus is done right. Painting different classic rock styles on a paranoid widescreen canvas, it was an album that touched on Bowie's usually bizzare, larger-than-life subjects with a heavy, focused sound that indeed made it the great nail-in-the-coffin of his gloriously weird golden age, and it featured many great songs to boot.

Apparently Bauhaus felt like the end of the world was already happening, and this was the chronicle of it's doomed army.

Prince- Dirty Mind

Pure salacious, lecherous beauty. Classic funk with a very-now bare-bones synth approach, it's an album of terrificly twisted songs and a celebration of the human body's worst (and in turn most natural) impulses, an underrated classic and never a wasted note.

(prince songs are baffling hard to find on youtube, so here's some dude reviewing dirty mind instead!)

Oh, from some bile-filled sarcasm with a message (Going Underground), sublime dance-funk (Upside Down), lounging around in an economic netherland (Do Nothing), to one of the saddest and most enigmatic song swans (Love Will Tear Us Apart), there were a wealth of amazing 80s singles and these are the ones that still hit the hardest.
