When Jon Lord releases an album as highly regarded, incendiary, game-changing and downright brilliant as It Takes A Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back or Fear of a Black Planet then let me know. If he ever manages to do that (he won't), then you can argue Deep Purple are more worthy of a place in the HoF than PE. Chuck D might not be able to play an instrument, but to argue that means he has less "artistic talent" in his body than one run-of-the-mill dadrock musician has in a single finger is ignorant as hell. Deep Purple are, and always have been, a fucking irrelevance. They're staid, boring, conservative. I don't mind them, but I can't think of a less important band. And being able to play guitar to a reasonable standard does not equate to "artistic talent". I believe "artistic talent" is more readily defined by an artist's ability to create a lasting piece of art that has some sort of impact on the world around them - I'm sorry but I can't recall which Deep Purple album is regularly thought of as one of the greatest of all-time (oh yeah, that's right, none of them). I thought this whole conservative, backwards, faintly racist "well they can't even play any real instruments" bullshit argument had been wiped out by now. To find people still pedalling that crap as we approach 2013 is somewhat depressing, and I genuinely pity you.

An argument worth having is whether PE should accept a place in the R'n'R HoF, based on their political stance and their "kicking against the pricks" attitude.

I've heard that argument before but I don't necessarily see it that way. In fact, depriving American-Americans of their instruments goes back to slaves having their instruments taken away and so they had to resort to the only thing they couldn't be deprived of, their voices. That gave rise to the blues which then led to rock n roll and all of the other music I love. So if anything I have a great appreciation for what resulted from a lack of instrument. However, I do think that hip-hop is less "musical" than other genres that use instruments. There is plenty of other things to be admired such a lyricism and vocal control but the musical aspect is lacking to a certain extent.
