Find something you like. Just because everyone loves a certain album, doesn't mean you need to.

Did you only listen to White Chalk by PJ? Everyone besides Grouper has a noticeable guitar sound, although with Lauryn Hill it's applied subtly (and often in samples)... even Grouper though has the occasional acoustic riff on Dragging a Dead Deer

I checked out Cage the Elephant and Arcade Fire.
I liked Cage the Elephant much much more. The vocals were still not my favorite but I definitely enjoyed the bluesy music. Arcade Fire was really far away from my taste, like a modern Beatles, which is not my thing.

True, they're probably very different to what he's used to.

Good picks, better than mine for what he's trying to do. Maybe also some Arcade Fire (I know, I know...), that's what made me notice there's also good music nowadays (I was a dadrocker a long while ago.)

Well Grizzly Bear is awesome, but no way should you start with them if you're trying to get someone who's into classic rock to listen to newer music. Their music is way too challenging on first listen. I think these would be good albums to start with for more current music:

Cage The Elephant- Self Titled
Built To Spill- Keep It Like A Secret (I know it's not exactly new, but it's close)
Manchester Orchestra- Mean Everything To Nothing
Sleeper Agent- Celabrasion

These might not be the most popular indie bands of today or anything, but I think they are really good newer albums that have some elements of older rock music. If you like any of these albums maybe it will open you up to more newer bands.

For me personally, I was obsessed with classic rock when I was younger, then at some point I discovered Pearl Jam which drove my lengthy obsession with grunge and 90's alternative. Once that was played out I discovered how much great music has been made post millennium.

Perhaps just pick up an album you've never heard anything about (including whatever year or genre) and just listen to it. Repeat this practice many times. It will help expand your horizons, trust me, you silly goose
