Philip Larkin - Wires

At first, i was a bit confused by your sense of humor, but after about 20 days i started to appreciate it. you've done many funny posts, but this takes the cake.

because this is what you do. get up.
blame the liquor for the heaviness. call in late
to work. go to the couch because the bed
is too empty. watch people scream about love

it could be worse. it could be last week
when the missing got so big

and sent it. it could be yesterday, no work

Lord, I've never heard of anyone who's read as Irish Lit as me. I've read literally everything publicly known by Joyce and written tens of tens of pages on his different works. His stream if consciousness was brilliant to me. Portrait changed my life (but so did Hemingway's elliptical prose). Ulysses was a wildly pretentious novel I studied for 4 months in class. I've read everyone else you've mentioned EXCEPT Auster. Beckett's existentialism in Endgame was so fun to read as a teenager. My copy of Wilde's Dorian Gray has more highlighted quotes than any other novel and it's one of the best social commentaries around. His Importance of Being Earnest was also a joy to read. I've also read Laurence Stern and Yeats, of course.

How are you so damn versed in the Irish literary culture?

I like Joyce a lot, particularly Portrait of the Artist... and Dubliners (the short story collection). I admire Ulysses more than love it, and I've never made it all the way through Finnegan's Wake. If you like Joyce you should check out Flann O'Brien - he's a bit later, and clearly influenced by Joyce, but he's really funny and perhaps more overtly metafictional (almost like early Auster, but denser and cleverer IMO). At Swim Two Birds and The Third Policeman in particular are genius. I actually prefer him to Joyce. Another Irish writer I like, though of a very different breed, is Brendan Behan - he's not as natural a writer as either of the above, but his raw honesty is pretty refreshing. Both his play The Quare Fellow and particularly his memoir Borstal Boy are very vivid, often funny portrayals of prison life, and he's got a subtle, surprisingly human touch when describing characters. Other Irish writers I like are Wilde and Beckett (though the latter to a lesser extent), but I suspect you've at least heard of - if not read a bit by - them.
