Agreed with Waiting for the Sun. Very good. Although in Radiohead's case, their 4th is their best. ;p

What about:

Talking Heads - Fear of Music
The Who - The Who Sell Out
Can - Tago Mago
Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland

Oddly enough many "thirds" are my favorites.

Definitely agree on Soft Machine's Third, although is it really their third album? I'm not sure...
I also love Big Star's Third Album Sister Lovers, and The Velvet Underground's self titled 3rd album is hands down their best

Well...going to my favorite artists:

Jesus Jones - Perverse (check)
Catherine Wheel - Happy Days (mmm...well, tough call - Chrome gets my highest rating and I would waffle between album #4, Adam and Eve, and Happy Days for being their most "defining")
Grant Lee Buffalo - Copperopolis (God no)
Blur - Parklife (not for me, preferred The Great Escape which was album #4 from them)
Depeche Mode - Construction Time Again (not even close - I have it, it's good, but Black Celebration which was album #5 was their best up to that point, and then they eclipsed that one two albums later with Violator)
Placebo - Black Market Music (I suppose it would be the one that defines them)
Muse - Absolution (I really like Black Holes and Revelations more, but I suppose Absolution would still fit)
Franz Ferdinand - Tonight: Franz Ferdinand (no, their first album is their best)
The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night (I'd agree it was their first truly defining album, though they kept redefining after that)
The Monkees - Headquarters (a good album, but the next release, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, and Jones, LTD was better)
Simon & Garfunkel (aka Tom & Jerry) - Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme (fail, most would say Sounds of Silence - #2 - or Bridge Over Troubled Water - #5, though PSR&T is still an excellent album)

So, no - I don't see a pattern here, just like in the sophomore jinx thread. Really depends on the band.

Wait, you're saying the "sophomore jinx" is established? Almost every post in that thread contradicted you!?!

Some more third albums that define the respective artists that created them (and which I also think of as their magnum opus):

Tool - Lateralus
Massive Attack - Mezzanine
Camel - The Snow Goose

...would Pink Floyd's 'Meddle' be though of as their third 'official canon' release? That's certainly the album in which they discovered the sound that would define them in the years to come, although I'd say that DSotM is their magnum opus, and the album that defined them.

Also I agree with these:
Muse - Absolution
Radiohead - OK Computer
Although they are not my favourite albums by said artists.

*Primal Scream-Screamadelica

So yeah, I'll say it again: The "number" you release an album on doesn't have any effect until the artist is old and gray.

"elephant" was the fourth album by the white stripes...came after s/t, "De Stijl", and "white blood cells". but on that note, "white blood cells" is their best album and their third. 😉

Here are some examples for when a third album is the best:
*Black Sabbath-Master of Reality
*Bjork-Homogenic
*Metallica-Master of Puppets
*The Clash-London Calling
*Rush-2112
*The White Stripes-Elephant
*Jethro Tull-Aqualung
*Primal Scream-Screamadelica

So yeah, I'll say it again: The "number" you release an album on doesn't have any effect until the artist is old and gray.

Okay, the second album syndrome is established but I have thought about the third album. The album that defines an artist.

Radiohead - OK Computer
Muse - Absolution
The Doors - Waiting For The Sun
Queens Of The Stone Age - Songs For The Deaf
Echo And The Bunnymen - Porcupine
The Cure - Faith
David Bowie - The Man Who Sold The World

Some are not masterpieces but many have become favourites of fans and still held with esteem.

Any thoughts on the topic?
