Noir Désir is one the most famous French rock bands. They sing mostly in French, but sometimes do in English. Bertrand Cantat, the singer, is quite the celebrity around here, for a lot of reasons, including a horrendous murder case he was involved with.

They started playing sort of a French version of Gun Club's feverish rock (and were then produced by Theo Hakola, of Orchestre Rouge and Passion Fodder fame), then evolved into something more personal, including chanson (they were great friends with Brigitte Fontaine) and jazz (Hungarian sax player Akosh Svelenyi appears here) influences. This LP is not their best IMO (they were best captured live, so Dies Irae would be the one), but it's arguably their most original. "Le Vent nous portera" is lovely, "Son style" still rocks, but on the whole I'm not too impressed.

Noir Désir disbanded following the downfall of their singer (and his imprisonment in Lithuania), and are still seen as cult figures in France, one of the few French rock references everyone has (they did enjoy great success here). To my mind, the band's overrated, however I will advise two records in which Noir Désir's guitar player, Serge Teyssot-Gay, was involved : On croit qu'on en est sorti, his solo LP from 2000 ; and L'Angle mort (2009), a project he took part in under the monicker Zone Libre, and which involved French underground female rapper Casey and Hamé, from La Rumeur, probably my favorite French rap band.

Noir Désir's best studio album may be 666.667 Club.
