Mostly because film scores in general tend to be overlooked. But this one isn't. It's quite commonly mentioned when people talk about their favourite ones and whilst it is nice I think there are many more that don't get mentioned. So, yes like any statement regarding how a piece of art is rated it is relative and relative to how other film scores are perceived I think this is quite overrated.

http://www.icidailleurs.com/

Pack #3 includes both La Valse des monstres and Rue des Cascades. That's 14€ for 4 LPs, so 3.5€ each, it's OK I guess.

EDIT : you can have the same in vinyl format I see.

Great, thanks Norman! I've never purchased digital music before, but maybe this would be a good time to start. Aside from me not owning any vinyl, I highly doubt they would be delivered in one piece to Almaty, if they got here at all.

@Norman: I've been wanting to explore some of Tiersen's other work because of this soundtrack, but I find them difficult to find, either online or elsewhere. Any suggestions (aside from going to a shop in France)?

There are download packs for Tiersen's back catalogue on his label's website here :

http://www.icidailleurs.com/

Pack #3 includes both La Valse des monstres and Rue des Cascades. That's 14€ for 4 LPs, so 3.5€ each, it's OK I guess.

EDIT : you can have the same in vinyl format I see.

Definitely my favourite soundtrack; it would have made my overall list if it had been all/mostly original compositions. My favourites are Sure le fil (previous work) and Comptine d'un autre été:L'Apr`s midi (original, I think). And just when the accordian piano circus music gets a bit too overwhelming, the two scratchy tracks from the 1930's work nicely, spaced evenly in the album.

@Norman: I've been wanting to explore some of Tiersen's other work because of this soundtrack, but I find them difficult to find, either online or elsewhere. Any suggestions (aside from going to a shop in France)?

@Hayden: PM your email and I can send you a zip of the soundtrack. This goes for anyone else, for that matter.

The movie is plain horrible, the music's OK, the best titles were on other Tiersen albums before this one. Tiersen can be boring, and this is not his best LP (I'd say La Valse des monstres or Rue des Cascades can have the title). There is an awesome remix of "La Dispute" by Third Eye Foundation on I Poopoo On Your Juju (an awesome remix LP itself), check it out :
I didn't like the movie for the first time, but I re-watched it a couple of times and it got better and better every time. This is now one of my favourite movie from the 2000s. It is not really a movie for men, they just often don't get it.

One of the few soundtracks albums I bought and I really like. I loved Yann Tiersen's work for Goodbye Lenin too.

But hey, considering I love a lot of Fincher's work, it might be the case that some of "his" elements made me enjoy this movie even more.
I'm not sure it would be the same without them actually.
Usually I find them really annoying, even Fight Club nearly crossed the line, but in Amelie it worked perfectly.
Haven't the soundtrack, but it's one of my Dad's favourite composers and often plays his stuff on the piano.

@Applerill, what are supposed to be Fincherisms (both in general and here)?

Fincherism (noun): Overused techniques popularized by Fight Club douchebag David Fincher, such as hyperactive scene transitions, overly murky digital colors, and depressingly sadistic subject matter.

A lot of people like David Fincher, but I can't stand anything resembling him.

But even there, that doesn't take away that Amelie is 10/10 movie in everything else.
