I'm not sure how psychedelic I consider this Faust album to be but it would certainly make a fine accompaniment to an evening spent desperately clutching a table leg in the mistaken belief that was the only way I could prevent myself from turning into a fish.
But seriously, I understand that psychedelia comes in many different forms but I was looking at it from the perspective of the artists intentions, whether that be a record inspired by a psychedelic experience, music designed to recreate or enhance the psychedelic experience or simply recording stuff while tripping out of thier minds. Without the psychedelic element it's just experimentation.

Frank Zappa's early stuff was pretty psychedelic and he wasn't so much inspired by acid as he was by making fun of people on acid.. I guess that means the influence still comes from acid but its less drug influenced as much as it's influenced by society.

The Charlatans
Jefferson Airplane
It's a Beautiful Day
Quicksilver Messenger Service
Grateful Dead
Santana
Steve Miller Band but to name a few but.....

There were others like;

Kak
Fifty Foot Hose
Seatrain
THe Immediate Family

who produced great but short lived music
Well, given that we both seem to have accepted that defining something as psychedelic can be completely subjective, offering examples of it seems a little redundant. Having said that, I'm listening to Faust right now and it does sound very interesting so thanks for bringing it to my attention it.

The reason I don't think of VU&N as being psychedelic is because it's not about psychedelics, it's explicitly about heroin, sadomisicism and the seedier side of alternative culture.
However, as purple pointed out, if it evokes a psychedelic feeling in Jasonconfused then I guess he's entitled to regard it as psychedelic.

Experimetation only leads to psychedelia if you're experimenting with acid, although I understand the same state can be achieved through meditation.

Yeah, but it's got a pretty classic sound to it, not unlike some late 60's psychedlia. Plus it was just a general rec.

Probably my all-time fave psychedelic album is this one called "Quest For Fire" by Quest For Fire. Great slow-jam psychedelia - I'm seeing them live for the fourth time this coming Friday, when they'll be playing their final show ever.

I heard the album. It's fantastic. Can't wait to hear it again. Certainly heavier than the other psychedelic stuff I've been listening to but I have no problem with that.
