My pick:

Five Leaves Left (Nick Drake)
The Shape of Jazz to Come (Ornette Coleman)
The Velvet Underground & Nico
Unknown Pleasures
The Smiths
Pink Flag (Wire)
Mr Tambourine Man (The Byrds)
Bert Jansch
Music Has the Right to Children (Boards of Canada)
There Is No-One What Will Take Care of You (Palace Brothers, that counts for Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's debut)
Tragic Epilogue (Antipop Consortium)
Crazy Rhythms (Feelies)
Dummy (Portishead)
Safe As Milk (Captain Beefheart)
Chelsea Girl (Nico)
Tim Buckley
Fire of Love (Gun Club)
Like Weather (Leila)
La Fossette (Dominique A)
Tim Hardin 1
Judee Sill
The Last Poets
Blue Lines (Massive Attack)
The Modern Lovers (counting it as a debut for Jonathan Richman, which it is)
I Could Live In Hope (Low)
Dry (PJ Harvey)
Elvis Presley
Suicide
Songs of Leonard Cohen
Enter the Wu-Tang
Down Colorful Hill (Red House Painters)
Original Pirate Material (The Streets)
Violent Femmes
Tindersticks
She Hangs Brightly (Mazzy Star - debatable because of Opal's short-lived career)

Ordinarily, I'd agree, however, let me just say that this one album is an all-time favorite for sentimental reasons among other things, otherwise, I do not care about ELO Part II on Moment of Truth or anything else!

My list of debut albums is comprised of ones that I personally enjoy very much and go from what I consider the classic albums on down to some great ones.

(1) LED ZEPPELIN - Led Zeppelin (I have always said that this is the best debut album I've ever heard. Though they weren't, Zeppelin sounded like they had been together for many years. Plant and Bonham sound like well seasoned veterans yet they were only 20 years old at the time this album came out. The thing that I'm most astonished by with this album is when I have to remind myself that this album came out in the 60's).
(2)THE DOORS - The Doors
(3)BLACK SABBATH - Black Sabbath
(4)BOSTON - Boston
(5)THE CARS - The Cars
(6)HOLY DIVER - DIO
(11)VAN HALEN - Van Halen
(12)THE CHIRPING CRICKETS - Buddy Holly
(13)FRESH FRUIT FOR ROTTING VEGETABLES - Dead Kennedy's
(14)KILL EM ALL - Metallica
That's all I can think of right now.

Those in bold are genuinely great debut albums.

Also:

The Cribs - The Cribs
Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted

but mostly:

Biggie - Ready To Die
Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt
Nas - Illmatic

I think you're confusing "great" with "masterpiece." All of the records I mentioned are solid debuts, and I stand by them as great albums. Your disagreement is based on subjectivity, taste preference, and possibly in my opinion, a ridiculously high standard of what constitutes greatness. You're telling me that Never Mind the Bollocks, Murmur, Exile in Guyville, and The Velvet Underground and Nico are mediocre affairs? And I thought I had high standards! Slanted and Enchanted was on my list, by the way.
