Revised list:

1. Talk Talk
2. Deerhoof
3. Sufjan Stevens
4. Swans
5. Talking Heads

Yes... I could happily survive on this.
I constantly find myself having this problem, but the way I think about it is that artists or albums will undoubtedly get old to us but we shouldn't consider them any less our favorites or greats. I rank them by how much they impacted me and how much I enjoyed them at the peak of my liking them.

I've done this before but that time I did it with individuals, this time I'm going to do it with bands/artists/musicians.. And I'm only counting musically here, not survival skills or anything.

Led Zeppelin
The Beatles
Metallica
Pink Floyd
David Bowie

Bonus: Frank Zappa (Mothers and solo)

These aren't necessarily my favorite artists but I think it would be a nice balance of things I like.

Bob Dylan
Pavement
Brian Eno
Miles Davis

Swap one of Miles/Eno/Pavement for The Lips and this is still pretty much how I feel. Not sure who I'd cross off though, I'm leaning towards Pavement because of the relatively small discography, but it'd be hard to part with them. Maybe Eno, although I feel like a discography so wide and varied, with some highlights I adore, would come in handy in such a situation. Fuck knows, but I do know The Flaming Lips should be on this list, probably in place of Pavement, reluctantly.

                          1. Vashti Bunyan (duh)
2. Joanna Newsom (duh. Oh, and does this include any albums that are released while I'm on the island? Would any new albums by her be sent to me? XD)
3. Don Van Vliet (he cheers me up. No sad music allowed on desert island! Now, if we were on dessert island, I'd want some sad music to counteract all the joy, hahahaha.)
4. Robert Fripp (King Crimson discography, and other stuff too!)
5. Syd Barrett (including Piper)

Nick Drake would be a good one too. Hm. Maybe Frank Zappa since his discography is huge and diverse.

Record labels is way easier than artists... (this may be because I am what Purple so lovingly refers to as a 'vinyl head')

Factory
Sarah
Creation
Rough Trade
Beggars Banquet

(with an option on 4AD, XL, Motown, Mute and Cherry Red... if someone has some spare space on the boat!)
vaguely, but only because I'm a largely digital buyer. if I were a vinyl head, I'd keep stock of all the record labels since they often let out small notifications on vinyl exclusives and rarities (though, there are better outlets for this information). it's almost hard not to notice it really, just like producers and release year, because almost every published list includes year/producer/label with the artist name and album title.
