If I were to rank genres, it would go: post punk (UK), hardcore (US), "early" punk (largely UK).

Bottom line: if you include post punk, the British are probably better; if not, the US is infinitely better.

I like what purple wrote, but to say Damned Damned Damned was the first straight punk album is silly as The Ramones' debut predates it. Also to say the New York bands were primarily influenced by Sex Pistols (rough paraphrase-not exactly what was said) is wrong cuz well most of the New York punks were completely different than the pistols and predate them as well. If you want to talk about influence, The Pistols sound was mostly ripped from Johnny Thunders, primarily in the guitar parts. Like total tip on the guitar sounds and riffs.

Jesus Christ, you really know your shit. Thanks for the detailed response, it was a good read. I think I'm going to delve deeper into punk and all of its sub genres when I have some time on my hands. I'll be sure to check out some if the bands you mentioned.

I'm gonna get drawn in.

Let's start with precedent and history. The US definitely kickstarted punk with namely the Stooges, but also the MC5 and even Velvet Underground. The first "straight" punk album was released in Britain: The Damned - Damned Damned Damned. However, by the time Britain had legitimate scenes, the US also had legitimate scenes (though, admittedly, most of them were inspired by the Sex Pistols). From that point on, US scenes diverged from British scenes, with US scenes largely going towards hardcore and US roots music while Britain developed post-punk largely on its own with a lot of influence from its colonies and former colonies. Both post punk and hardcore have had a dominant influence on "alternative" acts, both from Britain and the US, from Built to Spill to the Pastels. So, since the '90s, I would say the influence of each country is about equal.

If I were to rank the range of punk scenes, it would go: Los Angeles, New York, Manchester, London, Bristol.

If I were to rank genres, it would go: post punk (UK), hardcore (US), "early" punk (largely UK).

All that being said, I love US punk genres the most. If post punk were not included, the UK wouldn't even have a chance. I enjoy the LA scene more than any other scene, and that scene includes: Germs; X; Gun Club; Black Flag; Social Distortion; Adolescents; Agent Orange; Screamers; Blasters; and many more. The CBGB scene perhaps expanded punk the most outside of the post punk scenes, and these include: Talking Heads; Television; Suicide; Patti Smith; Blondie; Dead Boys; etc. However, I think British post punk acts like Wire, Gang of Four, Public Image Ltd., and The Fall advanced punk so far that the US could not keep up.

My favorite "punk" albums based on my chart would be: Joy Division - Closer (UK, post punk); Talking Heads - Remain in Light (US, post punk/CBGB scene???); Swans - Soundtracks for the Blind (US, Post-hardcore inspired post rock); PIL - Metal Box (UK, post punk); Jesus and the Mary Chain (UK, post punk???); Gang of Four (UK, post punk); Women - Public Strain (Canada, post punk); Stooges - Raw power (US, protopunk); Killing Joke - Killing Joke (UK, post punk); Black Flag - My War (US, hardcore); ... wow, I'm legit surprised X and Gun Club aren't on there right now... I have to change that.

Bottom line: if you include post punk, the British are probably better; if not, the US is infinitely better. Either way, the Stooges (US) are my favorite punk band, and the Los Angeles scene is my favorite scene (US).

It's a tough question. I HOPE THAT PLEASES YOU, JASON.

EDIT: I forgot to add that the Gun Club, X, and Black Flag are greater than anything the Clash or Sex Pistols put out.

There have been great subversive bands thumbing their noses at both empires as well as in other nations. A lot of valuable innovation in the genre occurred in the UK in the 70s and 80s. However I think most of the formative influences were American and this is commonly overshadowed by the fact punk was a genuine UK phenomenon in 77. I have to give the edge to the US.

3. American Punk

Sorry to be patriotic but The Saints is still my favourite punk outfit. Followed by The Clash and The Ramones.

For me it is American Punk because of the Ramones. I more than love their first. Sometimes I do not like the English accent in British punk.
