After 30+ years London Calling retains a vitality and power that is hard to match. I have owned the album since it came out and have never tired of listening to it. There isn't a bad track on it and it continues to amuse, entertain and provoke into its 4th decade. It is the work of a band, and particularly of a song-writer, at their peak and shows a maturity that few others from the Punk era achieved (Paul Weller being the notable exception). It has been in my top 10 albums since 1980 and I suspect will continue there until I'm old and grey!

It's funny that you made this post when I just listened to this for the umpteenth time a few hours earlier. In fact, I've been listening to this album more and more of late. Even with all the new music I've been getting into, I find myself in the mood to revisit 'London Calling' a lot. The musicianship is amazing- probably my favorite aspect of the album. The spirit of punk is there, but it's so much more than just a punk album (not that 'just punk' is a bad thing). I really love the energy. For me, it's such a fun record. I think that sometimes the deep, emotional quality that you mention sometimes gets overlooked because they sound like they are having so much fun. 'Lost in the Supermarket', for example, is a really profound statement on life in a capitalist/consumerist society, and it's also just a really catchy song. Anyway, a great album, and it's slowly making its way into my top 10, maybe even top 5.

This album never gets old. It's so deep and truly touches your emotions. As brilliant as Beefheart is, his songs will never be as emotional as those of Strummer and Jones. I don't know how such brilliant can be composed by just two people and in such a short time. London Calling is a combination of beautiful lyrics, strong emotions, brilliant musicanship, multi-layered songs that are pure genius, and political songs that are on beyond even dylan's protest songs

The most "punk" thing about London Calling is the cover. You see that and you think it's going to be some hardcore stuff.

By the way has anybody ever listened to the Vanilla Tapes? A friend of mine burned me a copy, but I haven't gotten around to listening to it. I've had it for months now.

Good points Elston and Mr. music. i respect your opinion and I too love Double nickels on the dime and zen arcade. I also agree with you Mr. Music that london calling is barely a punk album.

The Clash generaly has influenced more then London Calling personaly. The album shows how talented the punk band really was, covering so many styles. But i have to agree with Elston this aint the best punk album(is it even a punk album?). The best album? No. The best rock album? No.
The most loved album? Yes. The most charming album? Yes. The most honest? Yes. Its an album u love to the rest of your life, i bought a copy when i was 16, it was the first album i really wanted.

London Calling is a musically diverse and lyrically charming masterpiece. Without a doubt the album is in my top 50. Personally, I think there are better albums out there, but I completely understand and respect that it's at the top of some people's lists.

To me it is the best album ever but obviously not everyone will agree. It covers so many genres and not only mixed things people thought unmixable but did it wonderfully. Every album following london calling has been influenced by it. Its up there with VU and nico, Funhouse, and Revolver.
