Bohemian Rhapsody
Like a Rolling Stone
Tomorrow Never Knows
Karma Police
Paranoid Android
Strawberry Fields Forever
Sympathy for the Devil
Sunday Morning
The Boxer
Bridge Over Troubled Water

Only one of these would be in my overall top 10 (Bohemian Rhapsody).

It was kind of hard picking. There's a lot of stuff I might've thought would be in the 100, but wasn't ("Thunder Road", "Do You Realize??", "I'm Waiting for the Man")

I actually meant mathematically. The equation rewards quantity of ratings, mostly when working with items with low ratings. Every item, when calculating its rating, works as if it had 20 ratings worth whatever the site mean rating is (usually around 75-76). This means every item gets 20 "ghost" ratings of 75.

If an item gets five 100/100 ratings, then the average will actually be 80. An item with twenty 85/100 ratings gets the same rating. That's favoring quantity of ratings, and it makes all the well-known big bands jump up to the top of the ratings. I understand the need of having a bayesian average to avoid having items with one rating jump to the top, but a limit of 5 would do the trick and encourage lesser known items to get higher scores on the ratings chart. We already have the ranked chart to see how popular items are.
Waterloo Sunset
Bohemian Rhapsody
In The Aeroplane Over The Sea
Gimme Shelter
London Calling
Stairway To Heaven
Space Oddity
Wouldn't It Be Nice

I'm surprised not to see You Really Got Me (which is still inferior to Waterloo Sunset, though) nor any Flaming Lips song in our top 100 actually.

When I say odd, I mean for your argument. Pink Floyd, The Beatles, or a lot of bands in that vein of popularity are exceptions to the rule because their music is already immensely popular. In a sense, you can take any of their song (alright, not any, but a good amount) and call it their most popular. It doesn't truly matter, they're already at such a point where most of their songs are extremely popular. Perhaps you're right that it's not their most popular, but you're using examples where they're already popular beyond belief. The Smashing pumpkins are fairly popular, but nowhere near the beatles or Pink Floyd, so it's safe to assume that their most popular song would be rated as their highest. Modest Mouse is another example. Their most popular song is the one that is rated the highest (alright, it's tied with another one, but that's besides the point). Green Day, Tom Petty, Eels, Weezer, Dire Straits, Boston, and etc. are all examples of their most popular song being the one that's rated the highest.

You are right, maybe the bands I used as examples are far too popular to have "this one characteristic song". Among the bands you state as examples, yes, this probably counts for Dire Straits and Boston, but the case of Smashing Pumpkins is a little wird since there is a tie between 1979 and Tonight, Tonight (but if you'd state the first one is considered their trademark song I wouldn't absolutely agree, what about Today?), same for Modest Mouse (tie between Trailer Trash and Float On, but I'd definitely agree if you picked the second one, so yeah, that would be the case). Personally I haven't got an idea about a certain song from Eels being considered as their most popular and the case with Weezer is that, most of the times, everybody picks something different from their debut album as their favorite, mostly among its singles. I always thought that the song from Tom Petty that appeals to almost everyone was Free Fallin', yet it's a tie between this and at least three other songs. Green Day most of the time is divided by the American Idiot fans and the Dookie fans the way I see it and still we have Good Riddance. You see, it's really perplexed. What I'm trying to say overall is that sometimes this counts, other times it doesn't. Still, I was talking about most popular songs off of certain albums, not artists in general, which is a bit more complicated than that.

JMan wrote:

I've always heard Brain Damage and Time more often. I think it was Brain Damage/Eclipse that played on the radio more. I've hardly ever heard anyone talk about Money. Heck, I never heard Money until I heard the album.

Strange. I always thought Money as one of the traditional tracks on classic rock radio, it's also the most successful commercially single off of DSOTM. Although I've also listened to Brain Damage on these stations a lot. The most insane thing however is that they have NEVER played Time. At least in my country.

When I say odd, I mean for your argument. Pink Floyd, The Beatles, or a lot of bands in that vain of popularity are exceptions to the rule because their music is already immensely popular.

Also Pixies. Damn you, Fight Club.

Money is by far the most well-known song from DSOTM, yet it's not even a track pick. A Day In The Life, while legendary among hardcore music aficionados, is definitely not the song everyone refers to in everyday life when thinking of The Beatles, let along off of Sgt. Pepper's (most possibly they'll refer to Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds or With A Little Help Of My Friends). Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2 is definitely the most famous song off of The Wall, but the highest rated is Comfortably Numb. And so on. Well, at least that's how I see it, sorry if I seem to say it in a way that does not seem right, it was not intended. Yes it's really hard choose 10 songs, I'm always changing my mind, I guess I'm thinking in too many Beatles songs:
I would say that Eleanor Rigby by the Beatles is such an honest song, you know what I mean guys, maybe you don't.
1979 by Smashing Pumpkins it sounds like life, you probably going to think I'm crazy but 1979 sounds just like life.
Come Together by the Beatles is the song of a generation.
Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead, such a smart band, I mean only them could do something like that, melancholic, beautiful, perfect.
You Can't Always Get What You Want by The rolling stones such a great song.
A Day In The Life by the Beatles blows my mind every time I hear it.
Like A Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan, the song couldn't miss.
Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen is just amazing.
I feel that Karma Police by Radiohead is full of anger, and I love it because feels real.
And last but not least God Only Knows by The Beach Boys, one of the most beautiful of all time.

Too lazy to make my list, but it's pretty disheartening to see songs by a lot of the same bands. Nothing's wrong with that, just makes me less enthusiastic. I was surprised to see 1979 by the smashing pumpkins at 81 though.

                          15 in no order:
A Day In The Life - The Beatles
Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Parts I-V - Pink Floyd
Where Is My Mind? - Pixies
Reckoner - Radiohead
Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels) - Arcade Fire
Wouldn't It Be Nice - The Beach Boys
How To Disappear Completely - Radiohead
Sunday Morning - The Velvet Underground
Rebellion (Lies) - Arcade Fire
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out - The Smiths
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon and Garfunkel
Once In A Lifetime - Talking Heads
Breathe - Pink Floyd
Pyramid Song - Radiohead

This was a good thread. Relistened to a lot of old favourites, too much nostalgia though with some of them.
