For me it's just... well the whole thing puts me off. Beefheart is good when he's doing more conventional stuff. I guess I just don't like avant garde music that much.

The album is... Well it is interesting and... different 😲

I never found the music it's self particularly difficult or off putting

But the vocals are just disgusting, and this really hinders an otherwise good album

One of the only albums where this has been a problem for me

Trout Mask Replica is a masterpiece, IMO. And so is Highway 61 Revisited, incidentally (for all those people talking about who is better than who....).

I think the reason why I lean towards Beefheart is because he is a trailblazer lyrically and musically. As a poet, I'm not sure he is quite as influential as Dylan, though as a writer he is certainly one of the greatest. As a musician, I think Beefheart greatly surpasses Dylan, primarily because Beefheart composed all his own music, whereas Dylan employed a (highly talented) backing band. Bob Dylan's songs are very simple and the brilliant moments can usually be attributed to the organ or lead guitar player (and sometimes Dylan's harmonica ie Pledging my Time).

If you're going to go with who is better? God I have no idea. Dylan is certainly more well-known, but Beefheart has complexity. He is very distinct in his style.

Both of them will be remembered as the geniuses of 20th century.
But i think Beefheart was more talented and his complex music will stand the test of time much better.

Beefheart did more if you only are focusing one section of music (Experimental/Avant Garde). But when comparing Beefheart's effect on all genres of music to Dylan's effect on all genres of music, Dylan wins. Beefheart influenced Avant Garde and Experimental where as Dylan influenced many more genres. That said, both of them are geniuses and to pick on over the other is a very tough choice.

Dylan's music is incredibly simple, especially on albums like Freewheelin' & BiaBH (first song he strums A-chord for the entire verse). The only records of Bob's that are musically interesting are Blonde on Blonde, HWY 61, & Blood on the Tracks. Perhaps the live one you mentioned, performed with The Band (?), is worth mentioning as well, but most of his music is standard fare (with some exceptionally philosophic lyrics.)

Comparing those 3 (excellent) albums to even the first side of Trout Mask Replica is absurd! Dylan did much for Rock music, but Beefheart did infinitely more.

Beefheart's music is not "so much more complex" than dylan's, dylan's is just more accesible. There are still very many layers and the music is brilliant. TMR is pure genius but overall Dylan has made more brilliant albums than beefheart:

Beefheart's lyrics are on par with Dylan, which is a bold statement considering Dylan is one of the masters. Beefheart's music is so much more complex than Dylan's that it is a crime to consider Dylan a "genius" and assert that Van Vliet is merely "original".

In music there are very many great and amazing works but not very many perfect albums. A person who can make a perfect album is a genius and those 35 or so composers all made albums/works that are the definition of perfection.

Although Leonard Cohen never topped his debut he is certainly a genius. Songs of Leonard Cohen has some of the most beautiful and witty lyrics ever. With each listen you will discover a new play on words that makes the songs even more meaningful.
