I know where you're coming from. Generally speaking, a good dynamic soundtrack is an integral part of a great gaming experience.

I am not a bored young male. I am a female who will be 31 in one more month. I don't know if it that is considered old yet or not, but when I was a kid, I loved to play video games! I still have my original Nintendo and Game Boy systems because sadly I was never able to get any of the newer ones. I have played the Super Nintendo and the Nintendo 64 systems though, but what has been made since them two, I have never touched. What I love to hear when I play any system is country music. 😄 😄 😄

You must only play certain styles of games then. Because there are so many where the soundtrack is completely irrelevant.

If a game's soundtrack doesn't complement its gameplay then chances are I won't find myself returning to that game much. Listening to other music while playing video games is like listening to music while reading (which I'm sure some people on here do; I'm rather adamantly opposed to it): it distorts the experience from what it is meant to be.

Minecraft is a great example. Last time I played that, I was listening to Anamanaguchi's 8-bit opus Endless Fantasy.

By no means am I a gamer, but on the occasion I do play videogames (my brother has a PS3), I'll put on anything, but almost never the game music. Usually I'll be in the middle of an album when I start, so I just use that. The last two albums I distinctly remember listening to while playing were Something Else by the Kinks and Modern Vampires of the City.

Online competitive games would be an example where it's less improtant.

Also, some games have looping music where one just sort of... gets it after a while, especially older games or simpler games in general.

I'd say music is probably only really important for experience-type games. Adventure, some RPGs, and such.

Hey, lets not forget bored old men listen to music and play video games too. As for what I listen to, it all depends what I'm playing.

If it's something like Skyrim I'll usually plump for a bit of ambience, downtempo or some appropriate sounding post-rock, but if it's something like Borderlands 2 then I'll go with electro, techno, big beat/breakbeat or underground hip-hop. Whatever is likely to enhance the experience.

As far as I can tell this site is mostly populated by bored young men. So with that in mind what do you like to listen to while you play video games?
