What I think it is is that the album as a whole isn't very influential...it's tiny little elements here and there - a certain guitar hook or a particular vocal stylization on a particular song. There's a little for everyone if you're really into music and are listening to individual pieces of sound in the songs. But taken as a whole...it's hard to even call it music. It's a cacophony of sounds that is so random as to be completely unappealing to most people. And it's not a "challenge" - the songs really just aren't musically good in the aggregate, even if individual parts of them can be inspirational.

The thing is, I hate this album with an undying passion. I don't know why, I just do. I've tried 4 or 5 times and each time I just hate it more. It just drags on and on and by the time I finish it, I wonder what my life has come to. The fact that it's "weird" or "Challenging" isn't why. I just hate this thing. Its one of the few generally accepted as classic albums that I simply cant stand to listen to. There are some classic albums I dont exactly love, but if you put them on I could deal. Completely subjective of course, not suggesting at all its an objectively bad album or anything, but its just not my thing and I dont ever really see it becoming such.

Are you all listening to the same album I have? Maybe I've been listening to a collection of outtakes instead of the album...as far as I'm concerned, Trout Mask Replica may be the most horrendous collection of random noise anyone ever paid to record. I'd sooner call it garbage than music. I can't even get all the way through the album, it's torturous. Usually make it through fewer than 10 songs, and not one of them listenable in any way, shape or form. 🤡

It's pretty good, but just that. Yes, I've listened to it repeatedly ('round 6 times-yeah, I know, not enough) and while I appreciate a lot of abstract qualities like the unconventional guitar playing in songs like Moonlight On Vermont, the humorous, obscure lyrics, and Frownland is an incredible track. But the concept of a double album with this kind of experimental, free structure music wears thin after 50 minutes. There are many complaints every once in a while within discussions regarding music (I'm not pointing out BEA but rather situations outside the web) about how often highly acclaimed double albums like The Beatles, Physical Graffiti, Tusk, Exile On Main St. or I don't know which else are inconsistent and with quite a lot of filler, but almost nobody ever states how many disposable tracks this work has: Besides the lyrics, what else have The Dust Blows Forward 'N The Dust Blows Back or The Blimp to offer? These are not the only examples. I often think how much better this would work being shorter in length by, say, 25-30 minutes. When it works though, it really works (the raw yet beautiful Orange Claw Hammer, China Pig, Frownland which is probably the best moment, Old Fart At Play...). Having listened to individual tracks from Safe As Milk, I have the impression that it's going to be superior, so I am really willing to give it a shot.

I mean, we're on the Internet so irony is quite difficult to find if it's not obvious, and hairmarx's comment seemed kinda serious and in no way was extreme or anything. Also, I wasn't expecting that at all from him. Nice job, I have to admit.

to be honest, I think Beefheart was at his best when he did his thing within constraints of formal song structures. Case in point - Autumn's Child. Fantastic, fantastic song, one of my favourites.

Though TMR does have quite a lot of beautiful ballads though they're much more than just pleasant.
