Patti Smiths Easter album credits Bruce and Patti for the song. The Wikipedia entry says that Bruce wrote it but couldn't seem to get it right when recording it during the Darkness sessions, so he gave it to Patti Smith who rewrote the lyrics. It was never included on any Bruce album.

I will have to find it and check back

I actually hated him at first. I'll explain : I was 12 when Born In The USA (his first million-selling album here in France) was released, and I couldn't understand the words. Therefore I fell headfirst into the cliché the French media had carefully elaborated : to them, "Born In The USA" was a patriotic stance, and Springsteen some sort of Captain America, for which, in those dark times of aggressive Reaganism, I didn't care.
But them, sometime later, one of my good friends insisted I give a listen to some more of his works.
I nowadays consider The Wild, The Innocent... as one of the best albums of the 70s (unbelievably funky, I was stupefied when I discovered this record), and The River, and of course Nebraska, among the best records of the 80s.
Among his later works, Tom Joad is really outstanding.
Which shows that I should give another listen to artists I was prejudiced against as a teenager more often.

Speaking of Allman Bros..I am surprised that Gregg Allman's "Laid Back" is not on anyone's chart. It was a very big album when it came out and continues to get radio airplay even now. It is a very good album and is in my collection. His cover of "these days" is classic.

Actually, no. I meant Born in the U.S.A. I was ten years old and had mostly listened to whatever happened to be on the radio. Then this album comes along and knocks me off my feet. All the older albums I found later.

Sorry. For some reason, I thought you were a fair amount older than me. I think it's your rigid classic rock stance that gave me that impression. If you were 10 when Born in the USA came out, that means you're actually about my age. Hello, fellow Gen-Xer.

I agree with Bork and Mr. Shankly....
I have always loved Bruce since "Greetings from Asbury Park"...I'm a musician(classical piano) so I come from a performer's perspective...He isn't the typical artist that I like but it really is his songwriting and his energy that get me even if I am not crazy about an album, I always get something from it. "born to run" is such a classic just in terms of production, it was a huge achievement. You have to see his show, the energy level is so high..for me, he brought back the essence of what rock n roll or rock in general was supposed to be about, provided an alternative to hair meta/new wave crap that was taking over the rock scene. What I look for in an album is that it has direction, that the music/lyrics/performance are all on the same page. Most of Springsteen's music fulfills that requirement for me.

"Rosalita" has so much energy that I am half expecting him to jump out of the speaker. ("greetings.." and "Wild innocent" are my favorites).. I don't love all of his albums, but there is usually a couple songs that really pull me in. My only complaint is the overuse of synthesizer in the arrangements, they don't seem to fit the music/lyrics of a song. ...and then there is "Atlantic City" my favorite song..if you can't get excited about that, I don't know what to say..

But I soon realized and still hold on to the notion that what really sticks out is his first two, largely overlooked albums. I have both of them (Greetings from Asbury Park and The Wild, the Innocent...) on my top 10 of all time. These two albums are quite different from everything he's done since, in that they are a hell of a lot more playful. The lyrics are great (and mostly about young working class America), but the music delivered by the E Street Band is so incredibly enthralling that I can listen to it over and over without getting bored. I can understand if someone finds 80s Springsteen (and everything after) old peoples porridge rock, but these two albums can not be put in that category. They are refreshing as hell (if hell is really really refreshing). Springsteen is also one of the few artists that are still interesting to listen to in a crowd of 40,000 people. Seen him a couple of times, but on the Magic tour he was quite the crowd pleaser. No just standing there delivering what's on the albums, but actually interacting with 40,000 people, making them feel part of it. Great stuff.
