SOOOO much of American Music Culture comes from the African American community.

Soooo much of British Music Culture too, though 😉

I voted UK for the love of Joy Division and Beatles, but that was pretty close, cause I love The Velvet Underground and Miles Davis too...

I think this is spot on if I understand it like I think you mean it... I think African Americans influenced music in the UK more than anyone else of African decent.

Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and Beatles all covered/have stated African American music was huge influence on them.

I'm sure Skinny will have a few choice words

I didn't say there aren't people of African decent in the UK... have no idea how that became a logical thing for you.

I just haven't heard of the massive influence on music culture like it has been in the states. American's really have just about all of their music culture to thank for the African American community. Right?

I am in no way advocating that black people in the UK aren't musical... I just haven't heard how it compares to the massive musical influence of it on this side of the pond, including Jamaica.

I mean for example, when you think of German literature, May Ayim isn't who first comes to mind, yet she greatly contributed to modern German literature. I feel all of the British artists mentioned so far are nowhere near the level of a realm of influence as say Louis Armstrong, Jimi Hendrix, or Dr. Dre.

Which UK artist that isn't white is in BEA top 100 (or dare I even say top 500) artists?

There's plenty that are (African) American... that's the point I'm making.

Goddammit why do people have to misunderstand me.

EDIT: There are 7 of the top 20 artists in America that are African American... ZERO for the top 20 of the Brits.

THAT was the point I was making.

The UK has almost all of the best artists, but the US has almost all of the good artists. It mind sound like a trivial distinction, but the US is much more musically deep while Britain is way more top heavy.

America absolutely destroys Britain in this. That said, Britain certainly distinguished itself in Indie/Alt rock/pop and electronic from the 70's onwards, and the typical big rock names (Stones, Beatles, Who) certainly measure up to their American peers. But then Britain certainly doesn't compete when you factor in America's total dominance pree mid-60's and in regards to rap. That said, America was always more likely to dominate given it's much greater population and generally more open and exciting culture - up until the 60's, there isn't much really exciting coming out of Britain music-wise (certainly not anything thats popular) that I know of, it's all very unremarkable light pop. Might have something to do with both greater prosperity in America relative to Britain and the diversity of radio within America, whereas the BBC pretty much had a monopoly (and would definitely not be open to more exciting music if it did exist.

As for the vote I must admit for me the origins of rock are British with the Beatles, the Stones, the Kinks etc (I know lots of people won't agree because of course American jazz and Blues and Elvis were the real roots and even that is not true) but anyway I'm inclined for this reason to go British but when I look at my overall chart is 43% US and 40% UK and I suppose this is a reflection of the truth because the US pre-Indie and grunge are maybe more what I really like. So I voted US

I think you're definitely right that it's "easier" for some places to focus on musical careers I guess or to come in with certain ideas/influences, that Mbongwana Star album from last year should be proof enough that music can come out of any corner of the globe and be unique, incredible, and innovative.

There's been a music ban in Mali for a few years. Meanwhile there's countries that support the arts with major monetary grants. Yeah, definitely easier in some places than others.

I hate to say it... but if you were to get rid of white people... UK wouldn't even compare... like AT ALL. Unless I'm unfamiliar with non-white groups from the UK.

SOOOO much of American Music Culture comes from the African American community. Like... just about all of it and of course the white man capitalized on it every time:

Link

Don't sell Kele short, his solo work isn't great and new Bloc Party's lost me but Silent Alarm is one of the best albums to come out of any country, ever.

In terms of just black British rappers, you've got everyone from Dizzee Rascal to Tinie Tempah to Roots Manuva to Rizzle Kicks. Slick Rick was even born across the pond, a fact I honestly only just learned.

On top of that you've got the fact that people can be influenced by other country's music - just look at Graceland. There's also Chuck Berry's frankly savage interview about Joy Division and other British punks, and while he obviously exaggerates you can definitely hear the influence of some of the people he talks about them ripping off.

All music's ripped off from the first guys who banged on rocks anyways.

Oh also

Allabaster wrote:

While it is true that great music can be made anywhere, the circumstances that promote innovation are far from universal.

I think you're definitely right that it's "easier" for some places to focus on musical careers I guess or to come in with certain ideas/influences, that Mbongwana Star album from last year should be proof enough that music can come out of any corner of the globe and be unique, incredible, and innovative.

bestdressed wrote:

Rock-wise both countries are pretty even (maybe a slight edge to the USA). But once you put jazz in the mix then the USA destroys Great Britain.

'

I hate to say it... but if you were to get rid of white people... UK wouldn't even compare... like AT ALL. Unless I'm unfamiliar with non-white groups from the UK.

SOOOO much of American Music Culture comes from the African American community. Like... just about all of it and of course the white man capitalized on it every time:

Jazz: George Gershwin

Rock N' Roll: Elvis

Funk: Luckily this is probably the greatest time for equality with a band like Sly and the Family Stone. Can't think of how the white man capitalized on this of the top of my head.

Rap/Hip-hop: Eminem

I'm not necessarily advocating that they purposely did this... but it undeniably happened.

And then to top it all off, African American culture directly or indirectly influenced a lot of the big artists from the UK.

I voted 'Mericuh, but have to be honest it's really hard to deny Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Radiohead came from UK and just about swayed my vote, but in the end it didn't.

I'm sure I'm oversimplifying LOTS of things... but those are my initial thoughts.

I mean, my chart leans US, but I've also had more opportunities to see American bands than foreign bands because it's much easier for them to tour in their own country, and the people I know that are really into the scenes of music I actively seek out at this point are in a few different spots in America but are all American. I've yet to spend enough time abroad (or near to it) to get involved in those scenes. *shrugs*

Geography really doesn't play into the quality of music anyways.

I voted for the U.K, I'm probably very biased when I say that, but if I came on this site with the mindset I had when I was young, I would've refused to give any artists from America a chance. But now I'm more open to any kind of music and I do realise that the U.S does have good music to win me over and they have some great bands. British music probably caught my heart first, I don't know.

Each person has there own definition of 'good', so there is no definitive way of knowing which country wins this debate, I mean personally I'd probably prefer British music from the 60-70's, whereas since the 80's I would choose American music hands down, but that's just my choice. It's all down to personal preference. Anyway, abstain.
Per capita (UK population is about 1/8 US) , good British albums far exceed American albums. On any given week, listen to the top 20 in the US and the top 20 in the UK, cross out the overlaps, and there will be more British top 20 that I like.
