I dont know what it is, But any song that I listen to on a game I cant take seriously when I listen to it on its own (radio/album) A major one being Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out. I bought NFL 2005 and that song just played over and over and just seemed like muzak rather than music, This may be a dumb flaw but I cant help it, If I hear it first on a game, thats it, I most likely will never enjoy it on its own merit

Before age 17, didn't listen to any rock (Coldplay was as close as it got). First type of music I got into at age 13 was film + game soundtracks.
My initial interest in soundscapes and mood-setting music is likely the reason I like diegetic sound in my music today, and have a fondness for ambient music.
Videogame soundtracks got me interested in electronica around age 15 (prominently Aphex Twin).
17 was the breakthrough year, where I discovered Porcupine Tree while looking for ambient music (they were tagged with it). Since they covered such a broad spectrum of genre, they became my gateway into each of these. I also started to look for more bands that covered a large spectrum of genres in their music, and hence, my progressive rock leanings.

Quite unusual eh?
The Beatles (White Album)
Led Zeppelin 4
White light white heat
Abbey Road
Hunky Dory
Madman across the water
Close to the edge
Everybody knows this is nowhere
Astral Weeks
Moondance
Talking Book

...That's basically the most unembarrassing list of albums ever written.

No, the person who I was made which music I listen to. Music I could have listened to could have changed the music I would have listened to but music wouldn't have changed me anymore than it has changed anyone else who has listened to music.

When I turned 13, I took a big step just listening to new alternative and pop music due to the influence of my brother, I would listen to;
The Strokes
Kings of Leon
Paolo Nutini
Cold War Kids
Will Young
Pigeon Detectives
and my favourite would have to been Razorlight and the album "Up All Night"
Ray LaMontagne
Arctic Monkeys

This trend continued until I was 15, then I started to listen to my fathers and mothers music alot more, so came into realm of older music;
Bob Dylan
T REX
Stevie Wonder
Neil Young
Otis Redding
Sam Cooke
Roxy Music
Pink Floyd
Beatles
Van Morrison
Simon and Garfunkel

and ever since I have been 16 to now 17 I have been trying to discover more and more music, and I am still looking out for types of music I have not listened to, and albums I have never listened to.. So my teen years have been few in years thus far, but I have listened to close 1000 albums as of this date, and I do feel that the music has made me who I am today on the point that Outlaw made, if it were not for music, I would be a totally different person..

I think that you (Mr. Shankly) are correct...it seems that our memory is imprinted with the music and experiences of our youth, just like any other part of your personality. If you are an 'active' music lover, you will search out new musical experiences to broaden your lexicon, but even that will be shaped by your past. As I listen to the music of the past decade, I can see that I am drawn to music that is similar to the music of my youth. I can still enjoy music that is very different, but it is more of an "appreciation" and not a real connection.
Yes to a degree all experiences influence what you enjoy later. The problem some people have is the lack of desire to be exposed to new experiences or the ability to appreciate same.

Outlaw raised an interesting question though that I have wondered before: Does the music you hear during your formative years or at key points in your life influence what you enjoy later on?

Now having posed this question, I realize that as one becomes an adult, usually his or her music taste greatly expands as he/she gets older, but I do think teens and young adults have a tendency to stick to what they know. I'm curious what other think about this.

No I don't think you were attacking old music. I think you were saying that music made you what you are today. If you listened to something different you would be something different. You like the way you are and are afraid (paranoid) to try something different (old music) because it might make you something different (close minded).

Don't really want you to think I am attacking you. I just found your statement confusing and a tad unbelievable. I am not sure that music has that much power.

Between 1998 and 2002 (my high school years), my playlist might have looked like this:

Tonic - Lemon Parade
Crowded House - Recurring Dream
Something For Kate - Echolalia
Audioslave - Audioslave
Coldplay - Parachutes
Ben Folds - Rockin' The Suburbs
Gorillaz - Gorillaz
Powderfinger - Odyssey #5
Alex Lloyd - Watching Angels Mend
The Living End - Roll On
The Whitlams - Torch The Moon
Weird Al Yankovic - Running With Scissors
Greenday - Warning
Travis - The Man Who

I had not known of The Cure, White Stripes, Echo/Bunnymen, Peter Gabriel, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Jeff Buckley, David Bowie (the list goes on), til I reached university. So mostly Aussie Rock and mainstream stuff.

That is hard to understand. How can knowing history make you closed minded?

It is a little paranoid of me to say isn't? An example would be if I was to listen to an album which would of made me stay rooted to particular genre most my life. Ofcourse I would be as happy with my collection but I may end up disliking albums that I would of liked. Maybe adding one album somewhere along the path would of changed the whole journey. One album different in 2005 or 2006 would of set me on a path where I had no interest in '1001 albums to listen before you die' or besteveralbums, therefore missing out on many classics.

This could all be summed up as I'll be pessimistic about changing the outcome of the past.

I thought about that once and decided that anything beyond 2009 would alter my musical collection greatly and make me more close minded somehow.
