I got the impression he is from watching interviews with the members of Monty Python in bonus materials from some of their movies.

He may well be the most prolific writer but Gilliam is clearly the most prolific director.

I think that Cleese is most famous for the crowd, but I think Palin is the most versatile of them. Monty Python's Flying Circus first aired on the BBC on 5 October 1969 - My birthday 😉

All of them, though, in my book, as far their post-Python careers are concerned, nothing compares with "Fawlty Towers" (Cleese).

Do we really need reminding that Idle is responsible for this? He hasn't stopped sing it since!

It's either Gilliam or Cleese in my book, I went Gilliam since hes less appreciated. Gilliam's definitely the best filmmaker out of the bunch anyway.

Terry Jones for me. He was the most prolific writer and director in the bunch but never got the cred he deserved.

Yeah, I'm surprised by that too. I couldn't say I rate anything post-Rutles, his filmography is atrocious and he's milked everything he can out of Python.

For his post-python career, it's pretty terrible, yes. But his work with the Pythons was excellent.

Also Terry Jones deserves respects for his directing prowess.

He and Gilliam were both stellar in that regard. Looking forward to his next movie too!

As ButterThumbz pointed out none of the others can touch Palin in terms of acting chops.

Also surprised to see how popular Eric Idle is on here, only because my ranking would be thus:

1. Michael Palin
2. Graham Chapman
3. John Cleese
4. Terry Jones
5. Terry Gilliam
6. Eric Idle

Also Terry Jones deserves respects for his directing prowess.

If I were to rank them, from most awesome to not quite as incredibly awesome, it would be:

1. Eric Idle
2. Terry Gilliam
3 & 4. John Cleese/Graham Chapman (tie)
5. Michael Palin
6. Terry Jones

Though in Jones' defense, he's done some incredible work as a historian, post-Python.

Palin hands down. As hilarious and skilled as all the others are, none of them could touch Palin when it came to acting.

If it's just about favourite Pythons, I'd have to pick Gilliam because of Brazil.

Poor John Cleese had to star in a crappy sequel to Garfield, and poor Eric Idle starred in an even crappier sequel to The Secret of NIMH.
