I didn't like everything on Pet Sounds when I heard it the first time. After a while it started to grow on me and I really like it now.

Yeah it's got some crazy instrumentation which was definitely influential.

Pet Sounds is great (I agree with PoddleBites' comments though to a somewhat lesser extent) and so is Citizen Kane.

Off-topic but here's my thoughts on Citizen Kane: Citizen Kane is overrated (only slightly though) but sometimes I think like I can just about see where the people who claim it's the best movie ever are coming from. The story is great, the acting just about well-done (Welles is great as the main character) and the film never bores, but besides that IMO the visuals, and more specifically the atmosphere they convey, make the film so great. Its mysterious, curiously detached feel draws one into Kane's story. The visuals give a sense of "depth", and the atmosphere is almost always somewhat doom-laden (?), though fortunately the film makes that work in its favour and that doesn't make the film any less enjoyable at all for me. In short, it's grand, larger-than-life yet simple. I don't think I'm that good at reviews and probably didn't do the film justice there but whatever.

Yeah, that's right, I said it. I think Keanu Reeves is a better actor than Humphrey Bogart, by far - and the same goes for any of the actors in this film. Just... bland acting, lacking any of the subtleties or flavour that actors since then have brought to screen. It's like this lot was culled straight out of the nearest community theater - and, of course, this is half true; most of the "good" actors during this early period were first and foremost stage actors who didn't regard film as a serious medium.

This is the one problem I have with the entire post criticizing Citizen Kane, I can understand perceiving the pacing and writing differently but this is something I just cannot even understand nor perceive. Classic-period film actors had a traditionalist approach with a lot of subtle movements and charm. The character actors of the era were the only ones who breached away from that but even then not much. But calling Reeves better than Humphrey Bogart and his long career is just wrong to say. It is subjective, but no I won't get behind this. Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten were phenomenal at their craft and if you just throw away that by insulting and disrespecting their skills and careers....

Just no. No.

I love films (music and in general art) from every era but I won't insult classics that built bridges and defined film technique. It's bad to do that.

I couldn't agree more. A little dose of contextualization and the masterpieces of the past can become very much alive again.
"Pet sounds" is a work of wonder, and so is "Citizen Kane"- and most of Chaplin's movies, but I'm getting way off-topic here.

There's one thing I am severely disheartened to see about most reviews of Pet Sounds - they always touch upon the cultural influence of album without really telling ... what the album is. 🫵 I mean, ... what does it sound like?

The first time I listened to Pet Sounds ... I thought, "it's a standard Beach Boys album with Wouldn't It Be Nice, which is a pretty great song. And the dog barking and the train was kinda weird." - A standard teen's first listen expectations, right? It's just another album. Didn't have the surf songs and car songs I was used to. But hey, a nice album. The scratched copy I had was actually given to me with a bunch of other Beach Boys albums.

But then I listened some more, listened in the shower, listened on the toilet. And I heard Brian Wilson's Pet Sounds really come out. Listen to that first track again ... the sheer pure emotion, how perfectly it is expressed in the music, and how complex the music is, especially for 1966! It's not a twelve bar blues with some guitar solos - Pet Sounds is the essence of love. Emotion. Problems I've thought to myself but never said ... much how Dark Side Of The Moon ('73, nine years later) was my first musical breakthrough, on concept albums, on problems in existence (I still consider DSoTM the greatest masterpiece ever conceived, but I digress). The second track, that soaring melody ... more beautiful than any Californian surf track (ehh, save maybe for California Girls) ... and my personal favorite, the sweet, sorrowful, God Only Knows.

Pet Sounds is not an album to dance to ... it's not an album to listen to with your friends at a rave party. Or head-bang to at a concert. Those events have their own music. Pet Sounds is an album of emotion. It's an album of progressive rock 'n' roll. It's one of the most fulfilling musical experiences I still enjoy today. Who cares about the Beatles, or what anyone else took from it - not that its influence is insignificant, but influence is not what an album should be judged by. Pet Sounds is a creation of beauty. I've along with "Fun, Fun, Fun" for as long as I could sing ... but little did I know the complexity and mysterious beauty that would come when I learned to love Pet Sounds.

One may argue ... Neil Diamond pooped out (I at first meant to type "popped," accidentally put the two "o"s, and thought it was a better past-tense verb anyways, so I left it 😨 ) 'emotion' albums yearly, or what about any band that sings love songs? What makes Pet Sounds so brilliant? And I can't answer that. You just have to listen. It just IS different. Maybe it's Brian Wilson's beautiful vocal arrangements or the perfect harmonies executed by the Boys therein. Maybe it's the sounds, Brian's own "pet" sounds (the title is sometimes explained as Brian's favorite sounds), that bring the album to a new level of mental exploration. Or perhaps the sentimental, honest worries in tracks like "I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" ... I honestly have no idea why it just sounds so GOOD. Why the music eases my brain so WELL. Everything about the album is pleasant ... even the parts that bring an individual to tears!

Pet Sounds is an album you learn to love ... those bike horns always did it for me, hahahaha. Learn the album, love it, then move on the The SMiLE Sessions, where the true rock-avant-garde sadly ended for the Boys ...

Give it another chance. Or a couple chances. Don't be afraid to try and sing along. I guess I've just been cursed with appreciating Pet Sounds' charm ... 🙏 And, honestly, don't be afraid to cry (if you are capable of feeling such from music, hahahah) - Pet Sounds can inspire a lot in some people, not just Sgt. Stupid's Famous Anus Cult Band.

Heh. Yeah, that was too harsh, Sgt. Pepper's is pretty great too.

Just... bland acting, lacking any of the subtleties or flavour that actors since then have brought to screen. It's like this lot was culled straight out of the nearest community theater - and, of course, this is half true; most of the "good" actors during this early period were first and foremost stage actors who didn't regard film as a serious medium.

Even further off topic.

Sure. Acting today is technically light years ahead of what it was in the 40's and 50's. Movies like music is not only about technical ability though, and Humphrey Bogart remains one of the top three most interesting actors to watch. Even if the movie stinks it's still fun to watch Bogie. He had that little something that you can't muster up no matter how much you practice if it isn't already there.

I think you have to move a little further back to find the "...foremost stage actors who didn't regard film as a serious medium" too. Bogie was a movie actor, Cagney was a movie actor, Jimmy Stu was a movie actor. And all three were fantastic at capturing an audience.

Much like Citizen Kane did.

But I don't like either, and hearing about their legacies won't make me suddenly appreciate them more.

You don't like Citizen Kane? Pet Sounds I can very easily understand, but I'd be interested in reading what you don't like about Citizen Kane.

Well, at the risk of going off-topic, I'll list everything here.

Things I LIKE about Citizen Kane:
It's well directed, and the cinematography is very well done. I also enjoy the idea and themes of the film, even if it isn't half as original as people seem to think it is, considering F. Scott Fitzgerald was writing about pretty much the exact same thing almost two decades prior.

Things I do NOT like about Citizen Kane:
It's dull. The pacing is awful. I mean, even for films of that era it was poorly paced. It's just dull as shit - and this is coming from a guy whose favourite parts of Space Odyssey are the prolonged shots of space and the desert.

It very often breaks the great "show, don't tell" rule of filmmaking and resorts to needlessly long and unimportant exposition a lot of the time.

Film actors in the 30's and 40's sucked.

Oh? So it utilized various innovative technical breakthroughs? I don't care. So did "The Phantom Menace", and that movie sucked ass. Tech means nothing to me. Not to mention, over seventy years after the fact, the technology of "Citizen Kane" really doesn't hit me the way it probably did to the audiences of 1941.

THE DIALOGUE. IS. HORRIBLE. It's unbelievably awful. It's also just plain unbelievable. None of the conversations seem real - the film has a way of removing me from the experience with it, keeping me from becoming immersed. Casablanca certainly didn't have this problem, and it came out within a year after "Kane" was released.

Many of the things Citizen Kane did well have been done MUCH better by films that came out later. Sure, some may say that's unfair to say since Citizen Kane did these things FIRST, but, well, to me that just doesn't matter. If I don't like the film the way it is appears to me NOW in the year 2012, then I shouldn't be expected to make special consideration for Citizen Kane like everyone else seems to do and regard it solely from the perspective of a person living in 1941. Bullshit Hollywood nostalgia can kiss my ass. I don't like Citizen Kane.

But I am not really into pop much. I like rock.

I am glad this album exists and I understand the influence it had and am thankful for it, but I personally cannot listen to it without going into a diabetic coma because it is too sugary.
