I recently had the pleasure of figuratively sitting down with Itsit and talking about music. What follows is a harrowing journey into the mind of a genius.

SquishypuffDave: So tell me Itsit, how and when did music first seep into your life?

Itsit: Well, obviously I enjoyed a bit of music all my life, but my real love of music was kickstarted by two things: my brother installing Spotify, and listening to some of my dads old cassettes on car trips. This gave me a means to find music, and a foundation to build upon.

SquishypuffDave: Have your family had a big impact on your taste, or have you sort of branched off and found your own style?

Itsit: Well, not so much my family as my dad. He introduced me to a range of music, but most importantly synthpop. From bands like The Human League, I branched off into stuff like Joy Divison, Kraftwerk and Neu! Nowadays my taste has expanded greatly, mostly thanks to BEA, but that's where it started.

SquishypuffDave: What was the first album you bought?

Itsit: Hmmm.. My memory ain't too great, but I believe it might've been a greatest hits of The Human League. I wasn't much of a full albums sort of person.

SquishypuffDave: Are you more of an albums sort of person now?

Itsit: Yeah, definitely. I find an album that works really well together more satisfying to listen to than just single songs, though I do still shuffle when I can't think of anything to listen to.

SquishypuffDave: Can you give me a good example of this? An album building to a really satisfying whole I mean.

Itsit: MBDTF is a good example. It shifts about a fair bit in mood, and has an amazing ending, which I feel is important in a album working well, to bring things to a good conclusion. Obviously an album can be great without an particularly amazing ending, but it definitely helps.

SquishypuffDave: Have you got a favourite album at the moment?

Itsit: I don't think so, really. I find it hard to compare albums, they're great in different ways. And taste is a fickle thing, I used to call Pinkerton my favourite but sometimes when I listen to it I just get bored and put something else on. Whereas next week I might utterly love it again. Depends on what you're after, really.

SquishypuffDave: Do you find yourself drifting toward certain types of music or certain musical qualities?

Itsit: I tend to enjoy more conventional stuff I find. I can appreciate more "out there" records sometimes, but generally I find more experimental stuff to not be my kind of thing.

SquishypuffDave: Some people get a lot out of very "negative" music as catharsis, whereas I see you as more of a fun-loving guy

Itsit: I do like negative music from time to time, but I tend to enjoy more upbeat stuff. Guess that's why I can never seem to enjoy the more heavier (death, black) metal. Although I've barely listened to any which is a pretty big oversight on my side.

SquishypuffDave: Has music ever changed your perception of the world?

Itsit: I wouldn't say so. I'm not the type to have my life changed by music. As in, having a "before this album" and "after this album". Well, except You'll Cowards. But I think everyones had their life changed by that.

SquishypuffDave: That goes without saying. Now let's talk about some of the big issues. I would like you to settle once and for all: What makes music good or bad?

Itsit: Oh lawdy. Not quite sure what to say. I guess... the most important thing for music to be is inspired. But having energy also helps. If the person making the music is bored out of his mind and couldn't give a toss about it, then it clearly shows and usually makes it pretty awful. Putting a donk on it usually helps too though.

SquishypuffDave: Have you ever had a go at writing/playing anything?

Itsit: Oh yeah. Learning guitar at the moment. Still at a very basic stage so no writing anything at the moment, but once I'm more skilled at it I hope to start writing stuff. And hopefully by then I'll be able to write decent lyrics as well.

SquishypuffDave: I should ask, how did you find BEA, and why did you join?

Itsit: I found BEA when I was looking for charts of the greatest albums ever for some dumb project I was doing that I abandoned. I joined because I saw the forums and they seemed pretty decent.

SquishypuffDave: Has a song ever made you cry?

Itsit: Hmmmm. Well I will admit, I've teared up at Hyperballad before. Just at it's sheer beauty. But I've never full on cried to music before, I don't cry often (cos im just soooo hardcore) although "I Love You" by Lil B had me pretty close, so goddamn based.

SquishypuffDave: Now my final question, which is really just a couple I forgot earlier: what’s your current favourite song/artist?

Itsit: At the moment, my fav artist is probably Bjork. Really it's a toss up between her and Kanye. As for my favourite song, I dunno. There's soooo many candidates for it that I couldn't possibly pick. But if I had a gun to my head (which I currently do) I might go with Grimes - Oblivion.

SquishypuffDave: Yeah I sent that guy, sorry. He'll be getting a phonecall from us any minute now, then he'll be out of your hair.
