Aretha Franklin (not my favorite but who am I to deny her?)
Madonna
Joni Mitchell
Carole King
Courtney Love (she left a somewhat womanly touch on the music scene)
Etta James
Blondie
Nico

When I look at Female artists where others picked up from where they left off. These are the ones that come to mind.

It's actually the band started by Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman, both members of The Byrds. This record is great, Burrito Deluxe is very good as well. If country-rock is something you're curious about, you should try them.

Often forgotten in the influential albums list, I think the Nuggets compilation deserves credit for putting garage and psychedelic rock back on the map. Surely an enormous amount of today's rock bands have worn their copy out.

I agree with Mr. Bates..."Nuggets' is a great collection for anyone that wants a synopsis of the punk/alternative history.

All great female based artists shortly before and after Tori Amos, none of which would efer have her as a key influence. If you're going to make a claim, back it up with more than Jagged Little Pill

I dunno, Thomas. Jagged Little Pill was also very influenced by Little Earthquakes. Here's what Alanis herself says about it:

Obviously, PJ was becoming big around the same time as Tori, but I don't think that the general public was as aware about her. JLP was certainly the most well-known of all of them, but that obviously came three years after Little Earthquakes.

Also, guys, I'd hate to sound even more like a fanboy, but one of then most important albums of the nineties was Tori Amos's Little Earthquakes. Sure, there were female artist before her, but this album brought an influx of female records in the nineties. Heck, it even I pacted Trent Reznor on NIN's The Downward Spiral :0

I think that Wazzup's list is a good start and Cartoken is spot on...also, you have to remember that before AOR (Album oriented radio) hit in 1967, 45's were where the evolution of rock was happening so I would include the single "Talk Talk" by Music Machine, 1966, as one of the first punk/alternative records as I heard things from 1960 -1967....and very influential...one could also make a case for "You really got me", 1964, the Kinks as the first punk record.

Here is one I never personally understood. Many people just like you say things like this, some give bigger claims, so it is obviously influential. I listened to it and couldn't help feel underwhelmed. To albums that came afterwords were better, although I may of thought that because I was going into them with a lot of less expectation (I listened to them first too.) It might also be because they didn't have Nico.

Thinking about it, I have a new idea for a thread. Although I thought about it earlier but reading this has made me want to talk about it. 😜
