I rate charts based on how much Manic Street Preachers albums there are 😜 My next ratings should be based on how honest I believe the chart is. Imagining the bloodcurdling screams of rage I'll get has me feeling warm inside. 😄

Here's how I see it:

- Either fall in line with people's rating criteria or be criticized for using another one. I've stopped rating charts entirely. I hate the idea of telling someone they have a worse taste solely because I disagree. I gave people auto 100's at one point, but others complained it was unfair for my chart ratings (partial inspiration for deleting my chart and redoing it because it did give some unfair ratings). I then went to other use of criteria, and then there were people also complaining about that, so the only solution was to ignore rating charts. I welcome people to my chart, but interacting with other charts is something I don't do too often (well, not only because of the rating fiasco, but because time has been limited for me recently too).

- As for the topic, I get it, but tbh, what is the point of charts? we're ranking our favorites, but what exactly does it do for us? Absolutely nothing. Sure, people will come and see what you like, but there's very few charts in which people regularly visit and actually care for. What does this mean? Solely based on community statistics, people do not care about charts in general, because, honestly, charts in general are boring. Even the charts that aren't boring can easily be ignored by people. In full honesty, I see no point to charts other than recommendations.

- Now it boils down to the why, which is difficult to explain. The thing is, I'm one for trying out as much music as possible because I love music, if I've already listened to every single album on a chart, I see no point in the chart, because ranking your favorites, to me, is absolutely useless. It does nothing if it's the same or close to someone else's. And when you have many different people who have the same(ish) looking charts, you find a whole gang of charts you deem useless. Honestly, I hate the idea of ranking albums in general. I also hate the idea of the overall chart, because it does nothing other than show how many people can fit an album on their chart. My opinion is different from it, so I just don't care, at least, I don't care for shit I've heard a dozen times over. Honestly, the charts have turned into a fucking competition, which just gives me even less motivation to care. Anyways, I'm a bit off the point, but yeah. The whole idea is that once you've seen a lot of the same shit, there's less to care for. People know this. Things wear the fuck off. It happens for everything. Some things just get boring after a while. I love the websites, but I've had enough of charts and ratings for now. Sometimes I see a chart I really like and it's pretty inspirational.

- One last thing, my chart is the best because my taste is the best. That's just my opinion. If it's my taste, why wouldn't I think it's the best? I understand this has nothing to do with the topic, but some people may misconstrue this statement as me being a troll or something else. Honestly, be proud of your taste people, even if others disagree and put you down for it. I've seen a chart with solely linkin park and other bands that people really hate and what made me love it so much was that the person was proud to like those albums despite people being assholes about it. I hate that attitude that people display when seeing charts with albums they dislike. It's like someone's taste is lesser than your's just because you fucking think that they like albums you deem worse. Honestly, if you have that attitude, it's fine, but I'd hate to have it myself and whenever I see a chart bombarded for having what people think is shit, it just puts me down a bit. Honestly, if you're proud of your taste and still like albums I never will, then you're more respectable than most people. Cherish the music you love and if people disagree, then still cherish the music you love, that's a trait I love to see in people and can honestly make me very happy.

EDIT: One last thing. Currently, I don't give much of a shit about chart ratings. If I were to rate a chart, the rating would be random. You're just as likely to get a 30 as you are a 100 at this point, depending on my mood and how much I like you.

If you don't want people to think negatively, you should make it private.

But in any scenario, if you show common decency (not making judgements on anyone here), people will like you no matter how silly your chart is

Eh, I'm no longer sure what exactly I tried to say and how it probably got interpreted instead. I definitely don't think the rating system should be removed (did I suggest that?) and I'm not too worried myself that somebody's talking negatively about my chart, as long as it's with reason and not a personal attack.

Agree with the second paragraph, I'll try better to show more common decency. 😉 for Polythene Pam's statement, I'll take the "you're wrong"-part back. It's just my perception that at least some people care about what others think about their charts. There's a lot of personality hidden behind our charts after all.
That's exactly it! I'm sure there are many different criteria on which we base our ratings and a variety of ways in which we employ the rating scale. I'm sure there are those among us who'd happily give 100 to every everything they loved and those of us who reserve a perfect score for a handful of albums/charts/whatever, just as giving a 60 could be viewed as an above average score or a total slam.

Be very happy with 83! I'm alternating between 79 and 78 on my chart and (for some reason) some people seem to think this is one of the lowest rated charts. Not true. I've seen charts that were at 48. But my point is, though I'd love to see my chart go up to 80 one day, I'm happy with the 78 I have now because my chart is still eligible for Chart of the Day.

Interesting point. I think we're all more likely to rate charts from frequent users. I know I am. I don't really rate many charts. I actually have a similar view to you, but I do occasionally rate the charts I see as beneficial to BEA. Charts that have personality, insight, something unique to offer. But you'll rarely see me rate something negatively. I save that for when Outlaw changed his chart to a pandering version.

It's interesting to note that of the top 40 user charts on site, maybe 3 of them are from members who do not post regularly on the forums. And of those users, all of them are what I would consider people with pleasant online personas.

Make of that what you will.

I guess it's basically the same subjectivity that we base our album and song ratings on. It's all kind of meaningless isn't it
If Dennis thinks those ten Beatles albums are the ten best albums he's heard, guess what? I disagree. So I'm rating his chart poorly. That's how this works, get it? I don't agree with his taste so I rate his chart poorly. That's kinda how this works. I know, right? Mind blown.

How insightful 🙄

As to everyone who actually made an attempt to respond: I understand that it all subjective, and of course this isn't me just being butthurt that my chart isn't ranked #1 (I have 83/100 as an average rating and I'm pretty okay with that). I just don't understand what our subjective chart ratings are supposed to be based on. Some of you have said that it's based on how much you enjoy the chart or how much the chart adds to the site, but is this really fair? My main concern is that this has the potential to pressure users into putting more focus on making their chart "cool" rather than accurate if they mistakenly interpret a low chart rating as a reflection of them not being socially accepted.

I also understand that it is not a big deal and that it is easily avoidable (I actually do avoid it, for the most part). This thread was more to satisfy my curiosity than to enact some major change in the system.

Also, SingingPeasant96: No. If that were the case, I'd be going around giving everyone 40s 🤣

Dude, I don't mean to be a jerk, but taking away the ratings system won't take people's opinions away. If you don't want people to think negatively, you should make it private.
But in any scenario, if you show common decency (not making judgements on anyone here), people will like you no matter how silly your chart is 😉

Jackwc wrote:

I'm sorry, I had to stop reading halfway because it was stupid.

If Dennis thinks those ten Beatles albums are the ten best albums he's heard, guess what? I disagree. So I'm rating his chart poorly. That's how this works, get it? I don't agree with his taste so I rate his chart poorly. That's kinda how this works. I know, right? Mind blown.

Very accommodating. 🙄

I think you've got it right that charts that lack diversity/originality don't deserve to be rated lower, but ultimately, it's up to the one who rates it. It's a matter of taste and there's not much to do about it. Personally, I prefer charts with a clear preference to charts with a 1 album/artist-rule, but I can't outweigh this unbalance myself and most people don't feel the same way as I do about this.

I highly disagree with Polythene Pam. People care about what other people think about their charts. Why else give "revenge-ratings"?

I think it's a lot like Rotten Tomatoes Aggregation. These rating may seem "objective" at first, but you can see that it's rigged towards the unthinking majority.

Mulholland Drive has an 82% on RT, while the Avengers has a 92%. Yet if you tell any of the Sight & Sound editors that the latter is better than the former, they'll probably laugh at you.

This isn't to criticize The Avengers. But in that same way, chart ratings (and member rank) mean nothing.

I can feel pretty crummy about my 82/100 overall chart, but then I remember that some of my favorite people love it. That's more than enough for me.

PS: If you have Atoms for Peace on your overall chart, you are officially screaming out "I'm an idiot! Give me a 5/100!!" Just sayin' (Once again, not because it's a bad album at all, but because it uncannily shows how much cultural capital you have)
